Default UK may replace PM's ministerial fleet of Jaguars with BMW or Mercedes

Because the X351 XJ is out of production, though this also reinforces the rumors that the next XJ has been cancelled.

And not to get political, but it's ironic that this takes place after Brexit.

Prime Minister’s Jaguar could be replaced with a German BMW or Mercedes after car-maker halted production during the Covid pandemic

  • Jaguar halted production of XJ Sentinel after demand fell during the pandemic
  • PM's fleet of Jaguars has been depleted by crashes and breakdowns since 2010
  • This means Mr Johnson may have to resort to German-made BMW or Mercedes
  • If so, it would be the first time in history the ministerial car has not been British
Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Jaguar could be replaced with a German BMW or Mercedes after the car-maker halted production during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Metropolitan Police, who are responsible for the Prime Minister's cars, is due to replace the fleet of Jaguar XJ Sentinels but cannot replace them like-for-like after the company stopped production of the current model.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the fleet of Jaguars has been depleted by breakdowns and crashes since they were purchased under David Cameron in 2010.

One such crash occurred on June 17, last year, when a protestor ran in front of the motorcade in Westminster.

The vehicles reportedly feature special bullet and bomb-proof security armour, run-flat tyres, bullet proof glass and even a self-contained oxygen supply.

The cars have a 5.0-litre supercharged petrol engine which produces 503hp and a top speed of 165mph. In comparison, a standard showroom XJ produces 385hp.

Jaguar is expected to launch a new version of the vehicle next year after it halted production due to a fall in demand during the pandemic.

The newspaper reports that Boris Johnson may have to resort to a German-made BMW or Mercedes as his armoured vehicle of choice to attend events which would be the first non-British ministerial car in history.

It would also be the first non-Jaguar car since Margaret Thatcher's tenure.

Any car that is bought in to replace the Jaguar XJs will be placed by the Met. The force also provides specialist officers to escort the Prime Minister when he attends events in the vehicle.

It is understood Boris Johnson also has access to a fleet of armoured Range Rovers and a source told the Telegraph the Prime Minister prefers the extra space when compared to the Jaguars.

Well, if it's possible for me to illustrate this without getting excessively into politics, look what the British Treasury spends each year on Buckingham Palace and the House of Windsor....people who don't even contribute significantly to the government, but essentially do little else but provide photo-ops and gossip-stories for the tabloids (although some British princes, to their credit, have been military helicopter pilots). In my book, if it's good for the goose, it's good for the gander...they can give Johnson and and a few other officials (who actually work) RRs.

The Monarchy is a central part of their system of Government, it contributes more than you think.

Compared to the U.S., they are already paying proportionally higher taxes now. I'll keep it at that, because to add anything else would get into policy-differences between the British political parties....and the mods would delete it.

Sad what happened to all the great British automakers.
They should pick one of the few models still being built there even if its Rolls or Bentley.

Although not legally required to, since 1992 (after the Windsor Castle fire), the Queen has voluntarily paid tax on the profits from the Crown Estates as well as her own personal income. From these monies the UK Treasury returns 25% of it to her as the Sovereign Grant, This money is to pay for her expenses and upkeep of various palaces. So she more than pays her way.

With regard to BMW or Mercedes; well I'd go with BMW as at least they manufacture and invest in the UK. Only Mercedes F1 race cars and engines are made in the UK. That said, I think they will do an all electric XJ and this will form the basis of the next ministerial fleet. I think most pool cars in the Government are Prius anyway.

The electric XJ is on the chopping block. If it weren't being cancelled, I doubt we'd be hearing about this German replacement.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the obvious choice...McLaren.

Yeah, especially since there's a new Range Rover coming out next year, and we use Escalades as the default presidential transport.

Actually we don't use Escalades. The Presidential limo is a "Cadillac" but its not based on a specific car as its basically a tank thats made to look Cadillacish
