Cars Won't Make You Happy

yes good old days where there’s a bit of emotional attachment to the family car where they are part of the memories of growing up. We had a bright yellow Corolla DX station wagon where I learnt to drive in and we went everywhere in it.
I just can’t put a pin on it, but these days cars are so sterile I don’t get attached to any, even though I take good care of them.

I know what you mean...cars don't have as much character as they used to. Modern aerodynamics is partly to blame. However, I still get attached to my vehicles, especially the insanely reliable ones. Like a good friend you can always rely on!

It would sometimes overheat when going up a mountain so we had to slow down and give it a rest.
With a family of four and a 1.3l engine we had to spin up the fly wheel before being able make it up our steep driveway.
It was so easy to work on we changed our own clutch and differential oil (as it was a manual RWD). So got to know it pretty well. I was probably 10 years old back then lol.

But in general I don’t think people treasure possessions much as there is always something new around the corner that they can upgrade to. It’s more about how soon they can get hold of that new thing.

Vehicles also drove a lot differently from each other back then. In the 1960s, you could (or, at least, I could) tell, blindfolded, whether I was in a Ford, Chrysler, or GM product simply from the way the automatic transmission shifted, went into or out of gear from neutral, and how much noise it made. You could tell from the way that some of the controls/***** and interior surfaces felt. You could tell from the way the doors felt/sounded and opened/closed. Sometimes, you could also tell from engine and road noise.

Totally agree here...tech changes so quickly, we rarely hold on to things anymore. This trend meshes well with capitalism and consumerism. If we all stopped buying, our economy would come crashing down real quick!

I loved my RX300 for the years I had it, got a lot of fun out of driving, working and racing it, but had to move on and my CT200h provides plenty of enjoyment and good MPG even in sport mode. I think as I learned well living in Mexico for so many years, a car, any car provides freedom. I know a few people close to me without one even here in South Florida and when I take them for a ride somewhere, it truly makes them happy to be out and about and not in an uber or lyft.

In Mexico, though, wasn't one of the biggest hurdles to car-ownership simply getting decent gas? It became easier, of course, when engine-computers could retard the timing and make other changes underhood so that the super-low-octane stuff (often without detergent-additives) could be burned without ruining the engine, but it is still not good for it in the long run.
