Its actually not. The current G Wagen is all new and shares nothing with that old model.

As an owner of a “malaise era” Benz, a 2005 SL65, I can honestly say most of the quality problems are overblown.

Partly correct. According to Wikipedia, the 2018 redesign had very changes, but there were more extensive ones on the older redesign. I had partially-forgotten that older change.

No, its completely correct. The 2018 redesign is an all new vehicle.

From Wikipedia:

he second generation W463 differs very little visually from the first generation, and the chassis code, W463, is still retained rather than W464 as some media outlets erroneously reported. Only three parts from the previous generation was carried over to the new generation: the headlamp washers, the push-button door handles and the giant spare wheel cover bolted to the rear tailgate

What’s New Looks Old

Oh, don’t worry too much. Just look at the pictures. While the 2019 model is comprehensively reengineered—only the door handles, the spare-tire cover, the sun visors, the headlight-washer nozzles, and a bracket under the hood are shared with its predecessor—it still looks very much the same. The edges are softer now and the roof pillars are a bit thicker, but all of the important G cues are there: the awkward trim strips encircling the body, a spare tire hanging off a massive side-hinged rear portal, square-cut doors (now with rounded edges) with exposed hinges, a clamshell hood, and marker lights on top of the fenders. Without seeing the old and new side by side, most people will be hard-pressed to identify many differences. Heck, casual observers will go on thinking it’s unchanged.

Really lame that Mercedes had to let everyone know that these items were still used...

I believe the previous generation G-wagon is still produced.

They still make the military varient but not the consumer variant. All consumer G Wagens are the new version.

Starting to really see your argument well

Thanks. And the more of those old M-B products you see (mostly at old-auto shows, but, sometimes, even on display at some dealerships), the more you will see it. They were built like tanks. And, yes, some of them are still on the road, in service.

These were amazing cars. I remember gushing over them when I was in high school. I wouldn't say this was the last great Mercedes, but I do feel that they were the last great Mercedes SL.

i remember cruising around the los angeles area in my classmates SL500 (he was from a wealthy family) during my high school days. definitely a fun car, and only after all these years do i appreciate it for was it was! i believe they also made a manual version (not in v12 form though).
