Wasn't the Aurora very similar to the Pontiac Bonneville? The Aurora was never a big seller, but the Bonneville was very popular.
No, not this generation Aurora. The second generation Aurora was related to the Bonneville but not the first generation which is the subject of this thread.

Incorrect. The first generation Aurora and Bonneville were not on the same Platform. The Bonneville (9th gen) that existed when this Aurora existed shared a platform with the Oldsmobile 88 and 98 (H Body), not the Aurora (G Body). The 10th generation Bonneville was put on the G body platform alongside the seconf gen Aurora.

If it was not clear, I was referring to the 2Gen Aurora. Yes, the 1Gen version, mechanically under the radically-different body/interior, was based on the older 88/98.
I was actually more impressed with the 2Gen version Aurora than the 1Gen. Not only did I think it looked better, but it was a more honest vehlcle.....not trying to turn the old 88/98 into a 4-door coupe. The V6 was also a nice option, as the 4.0 Northstar was both unreliable and used more fuel.

Still incorrect. The 1Gen Aurora was not based on the 88/98. The 88/98 was on the H BODY platform same as the 9Gen Bonneville. The 1 Gen Aurora was on the G Body platform.
And this thread is about the 1 Gen Aurora, as its the one depicted in the video.

OK, on closer inspection, I'll buy that. Wikipedia has a reference on it, but you have to look very closely. It looked, a first, like it was the G-body, but then, there was the line that listed the G-Bodies as predecessors, not stable-mates.

Yes and no. The OP mentioned the Aurora as the "Forgotten" Oldsmobile, but, when most people think of the Aurora, it is the larger 1Gen that comes to mind....the smaller 2Gen tends to be on the back-burner, n more forgotten.
There were a ton of different platforms, what you find is as time went on GM simplified a lot of the platforms and brought models to the same platforms.

Actually that was the title of the video that was posted, which is about the first generation Aurora.
The second generation just didn’t have the same impact as the first, it was too expensive and by that time Oldsmobile was too far gone.
Agree and gen 2, it didn’t really look good, or expensive. The first Aurora was definitely sharp.
But the fit and finish on the gen 1, I remember the vents being screwed up. They were neat and integrated into the doors near the window switches IIRC, so it was glaring. It had nice materials, though.
All of these GM FWD cars of that era were so similar, with basically some cosmetic variations, and even in the highest trims the material quality was awful, especially the leather that felt like cheap dermantine. They drove the same, and had the same drivetrains. I guess the Aurora was built a bit better than the rest of GM junk and might have even been relevant if God did not create the Avalon.

They were so similar people thought they were all the same car, even though they actually weren't. So, as they got redesigned GM made them more and more all the same car lol.
As for material quality, the interior material quality of my Dad's 95 STS was actually excellent. Very nice plastics and vinyl, very nice wood, very nice thick leather. It was put together like garbage, but the materials themselves were very nice.
I must take exception to several comments made in this thread. I have owned two (2) 1992 Olds 98 Touring Sedans. In addition to having the best front seats of any car ever owned, their build and materials quality was quite good, they drove well, and got excellent fuel economy, especially in supercharged guise (33 mpg highway).
Compare build quality to say a Gen 3 Camry, the Camry was way way better built. They were well made for GM, but compared to foreign cars there was no comparison.
