Yep. Most of my co-workers and friends who buy BMW usually do 3 year leases and move on long before the problems pop up. Although they are taking their cars in for annoying little problems which are covered through the warranty period

Over 50% of Lexus buyers lease too. Thats one of the reasons I left Lexus, since I lease the long term reliability is wasted on me.

Again the S65 motor is extremely reliable as long as you do proper maintenance and don’t abuse it.
What happens a lot of times is ppl buy these cars once they hit $30-40k range and don’t want to pay to maintain them. The other issue is a lot of ppl track these cars and obviously that puts a ton more stress on engine and other components.
The reason why E9x are going up in value is the “special” nature of the engine that can rev to almost 9k rpm with great sound. The only other cars that have achieved this are exotics or the recent GT350 which is unfortunately a ticking time bomb.
I know this is Lexus forum but making broad statements like all BMWs are unreliable is like saying all Lexus cars are boring.

You'd expect valve train and conrod issues at 9k RPM, not main/journal bearings when "just driven normally" - which is what happens with the S65. Refer to the above thread for hilarity on the actual specs of the bearings. Again, never mind eating oil and the rest of the usuals.
And no, not all BMW engines are unreliable, but anything remotely modern generally has... at the very least, weird quirks that you'd better be aware of. Funnily enough, they had a period when their diesels were more reliable than their gas/petrol counterparts. Not -that- special since VW (AG) also had such a period, but still.
I wonder what makes the GT350's engine a ticking time bomb compared to the S65?

The point is, you can't compare BMW and Lexus in terms of reliability. To the new buyer who is going to lease whatever they get, it just doesn't matter to us. Its going to be plenty reliable for 3 years and then it'll be on to something else.
A car like this though is a keeper IMO, same as an LC500.

The group would be people who buy them new from the manufacturer. BMW has an excellent and very desirable brand, that's irrefutable. A bunch of people who buy old cars can sit around and grouse, but they aren't consumers for any carmaker anyways as they buy old used cars from third parties.

Sure, but that doesnt do anything for the manufacturer.

I don't think over sales are a problem for Lexus. Most people I know (friends and family) buy new than pass them down to their kids or other family members then buy another new one. In the bay area where I live Lexus is probably among the top 5 brands I see on the road

One of my friends who is an enthusiast of M cars has a separate maintenance budget set aside for his M5. For him routine maintenance includes head gasket, valve stem seals, and cooling system at least every 100K. For older 2nd Gen ISF and IS350 owners (like myself that drives their car hard) maintenance other than routine oil and filters is: Spark Plugs every 50K, water pump & belts, transmission flush every 100K. Brakes, rotors and tires are the biggest expense for us
We had an IS350 for years and I feel you on the tires. Not sure if my LX will be much better bc it's AWD but we'll see.

I totally agree with you on BMW. BMW is also among the top 5 selling cars people own out here. I was only arguing reliability. I'm one of those buyers who does buy new (I always buy the family vehicles new), but I keep long term (10 years or more) so reliability for me is important. Thus I would never by a BMW unless it was a weekend type car.As far as my personal commute car, I don't think I would buy a Lexus new
