It is not just being #1 but the consistency. J D Power has ranked Lexus over the last eleven years #1 nine times and #2 twice. Any car manufacturer would die for such a record. Lexus is also ranked #1 in lowest depreciation and customer loyalty. Car brands ranked by the best buyers experience Lexus was tied with Mercedes for #2. Lincoln was #1. How funny Tesla #30 out of 33 with no engine and transmission.
The issues with todays cars are primary with ACEN (Audio Communication Entertainment Navigation). Tesla is at the forefront of technology, so this is not surprising. With so many electronics in todays cars, niggles will be present.
Vehicle Dependability Study includes eight major vehicle categories grouped by J.D. Power as follows: audio/communication/entertainment/navigation (ACEN); engine/transmission; exterior; interior; features/controls/displays (FCD); driving experience; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; and seats.
All issues reported by owners are all tracked equally, which means a problematic phone pairing procedure dings an automaker's rating the same as a blown engine or transmission. And in fact, the ACEN category has more reported problems than any other, which means the majority of problems reported don't lead to a vehicle that leaves its owner stranded.

Probably still a better strategy than whatever LR does.
Yes the Model Y still has some assembly in a large tent.
If you read their assessment of Tesla, the issues aren't related to drivetrain. It all exterior / interior issues. Not surprising given Model Y quality issues this past year

Quality is independent of dependability but your point on their quality is spot on.

Their dependability is bad because trim falls off and other bodily exterior and interior elements have issues. The Model X particularly is bad because those wing doors are a disaster. The Model 3 still go has good reliability because it's a pretty simple car and has been in production for awhile. I hear the newer Ys are much better now as production has matured.
when almost everything in the Lexus lineup is multi years old now, they better have gotten rid of the problems. Not surprising with Genesis as they released 3 new vehicles?
Lexus models should be closer to maybe 10 defects. All their high volume sellers have been in production for the last 6 to 20 decades. Their newer stuff dont really sell. So 81 defects is considered extremely high.

and those 'issues' aren't always the cars... people with out of date phones, lack of user 'education', bugs in manufacturer apps (not the car itself), etc.
this whole ranking stuff has to be made much more sophisticated to be meaningful.

User error is a huge one. Ironic that common sense isn't so common.
Years ago I had a woman with an LS460 screaming at me because her car wouldn't move. I said "did you check the parking brake?" her response verbatim "ack this is an LS, there is no parking brake". Sure enough she had turned off the Auto function.

Tesla Suspension defects....and now the screen recall because they were only designed to last 5-7 years.
The screen recall is mitigated by replacing the 8GB sd card with a 64 GB card. Not really that painful a recall.
When all the rage is infotainment, I would say its a pretty serious recall...apparently every screen will fail. No camera, no defrost, and no turn signals...That is painful IMO...
