EDIT: Well I take that back. The Maybach Landaulet was pretty epic. Live that Oil Tycoon lifestyle.
The Maybach 62 had pretty much the nicest, roomiest, most luxurious back seat of any car in history. It is just on a whole other level in back. I am surprised it was not successful considering it beat Rolls and Bentley in back seat luxury but like many said, it looked too much like a S class but cost 3 to 4 times more. I was very surprised after seeing Doug Demuro review the 62 that they reduced the driver seat room to where it would have been pretty cramped for anyone of avg or tall height. Considering how much room it has in the rear I don't think it would have made much difference to keep the regular driver/passenger dimensions.

i wouldn't have guessed that either... doug also drove the model that had the optional partition between the front and rear seats, so idk if the addition of that impacts front leg room

Not my cup of tea either. Too much chrome and just way overdone - exterior. Interior is actually very nice!!!

Because they are just modified Mercedes. The looks from the outside is a step down from a Rolls. Therefore will never sell anywhere near the volume of a Rolls or Bentley.

Its like 1/3rd the price of a Rolls lol. Remember a Rolls Royce Ghost is $350k, a Phantom is $500-700k.

As for volume, Rolls and Bentley don't sell in any sort of volume.

I don't get the obsession with numbers and sales figures for high end cars.

The 57 and 62 were not just modified Mercedes cars/S classes, they had all unique body panels, a unique design, unique interiors, unique luxury features not found on any Mercedes cars. They were much more luxurious then Rolls/Bentley's especially when they were released, rear seat on the 62 was another level. I never found a Rolls Phantom to be very good looking, way too ostentatious to me but it does stand out and get noticed where the Maybach was a little too close in look to a S class. The Maybach name did not have the respect or prestige of a Rolls or Bentley and the very high price of them ensured sales would be low though I thought with the sheer luxury they offered it would do better.

The current Maybachs are basically modded S classes and look pretty much exactly alike inside and out aside from some small details, longer wheelbase version.

He means the current Maybachs.

I gotta disagree about the Phantom not being good looking, but in any event its a $500k+ car, people aren't cross shopping them.
