Always a good sign when the mechanic comes out from UNDER your car and says the valves are fine.
And the rest of the story:

i didn't follow the article when it said to leave the vehicle in park or in gear WHILE flat towing.
i think i understood that doing so will keep the parts lubricated, but i don't see how being in park or in gear would not keep the wheels from spinning. please edumacate me!

from what I read from the engineers explanation was you want the transfer case in neutral but the transmission in park or gear to lock the transmission (isolating it from the spinning gears or shaft in the transfer case )to keep some of the internals of the transmission from spinning. Because when parts of it spin without lubrication it ruins the transmission. It would need to be fully on and engaged to keep the tranny pump pumping transmission fluid through it. When towing the transmission if not stopped from spinning would only get partial lubrication, which is not near enough, overheat and ruin the spider gears among other things as they would run dry and overheat
i was puzzled by the statement as well so read through as much as I could to try and understand the rationale. I think I got it and hope this helps .
I admittedly know nothing nada niet about transmissions
