I’m not familiar with any other project they are involved in currently that’s ready for production. They said head of Gazoo Racing is the main presenter.
Maybe its STi and GR versions...

I'm hoping the rumors are true about a WRC-inspired hot hatch, possibly based on the Impreza/WRX. The presentation is being made by the Gazoo Racing division, so at least it's unlikely to be a boring commuter car.

Why has Toyota stopped developing their own cars? Has their Mirai vanity project drained all of their R&D capital?

At first I thought maybe something relating to their previously announced joint effort on EVs, but I wouldn't expect that to come from GR. So I dunno...but I'll be watching!

Just a small outside chance, but I wouldn't rule out a Toyota-designed midsize crossover SUV with a Subaru boxer-engine. Subaru 's launch of the Ascent went quite poorly, it had relatively few buyers, and has been unreliable, with teething-problems to boot. I wouldn't be surprised if Subaru is just giving up on it and trying something else.

2022 Toyota 86 Teased before April 5 Joint Debut with Subaru
2022 Toyota 86 Teased before April 5 Joint Debut with Subaru
The U.S. version of the closely related Subaru BRZ has already been revealed, so we know what to expect from Toyota's next-gen sports car.
Toyota says that the president of its Gazoo Racing division, Koji Sato, will be part of the reveal event a few weeks from now, so we can expect the second-gen 86 to wear the "GR" designation currently affixed to the Supra and the global GR Yaris hot hatch. It's otherwise likely to share its mechanicals with the 2022 BRZ, which has a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter flat-four that makes 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
A six-speed manual transmission will be standard with a six-speed automatic transmission optional. The 86 should feature a few styling differences compared with the Subaru, but its chassis will be the same, meaning it will be lower, wider, and longer than its predecessor.
Subaru says that the 2022 BRZ will go on sale in the fall of 2021. Given that the Toyota is debuting a few months later, we might expect its on-sale date to be later as well, meaning it might reach dealerships by the end of 2021 or possibly the beginning of 2022.
- Toyota and Subaru are planning a joint reveal event on April 5.
- We think this has to be for the 2022 86 sports car, as it's closely related to the 2022 Subaru BRZ.
- The debut will be live-streamed online at this link.

I agree with Hoovey...the BRZ/FT86 would probably not be a true unveiling.

The more I look at this, the more I think it is to do with the BRZ and 86. I don't totally get it, as the BRZ has already been revealed, but when I see the placement of the emblem in relation to the hood line, that sure looks like a new BRZ to me...
