FCA US Reports 1st-quarter 2021 U.S. Sales

  • First-quarter retail sales rise 25%
  • Jeep® Wrangler posts best ever first-quarter retail sales
  • Ram brand reports best month of retail sales ever in March
  • Alfa Romeo first-quarter total sales rise 25%
  • Chrysler brand first-quarter total sales increase 32%
  • Dodge muscle cars' retail sales up 29% year over year
  • Dodge Durango retail sales up 61%

April 1, 2021 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC reported a 5% increase in first-quarter U.S. total sales, driven by strong retail demand. For the quarter, U.S. sales were 469,651 vehicles, compared with 446,768 for the same period a year earlier. Retail sales rose 25% compared with the first quarter of 2020. Focus on growing the commercial fleet business continues to pay dividends with fleet commercial sales up 24% compared with the first quarter of 2020. Fleet accounted for 19% of total sales for the quarter.

“In spite of what started out as a strong start last year, before COVID shocked us all, this quarter was a very strong rebound for retail sales year over year,” said U.S. Head of Sales Jeff Kommor. “The consumer demand for our brands and our products was extremely strong throughout the quarter.” The Jeep® brand saw its iconic Wrangler post the best ever first-quarter retail sales, following the best ever fourth-quarter sales in 2020. Total Wrangler sales rose 25% to 49,646 vehicles. Jeep Gladiator followed suit. Following its best ever fourth-quarter sales in 2020, Gladiator posted its best ever first quarter with total sales of 18,822 vehicles, a 23% increase over the same period last year. Gladiator also had its best month of retail and total sales in March since launch.

This is an exciting time for the Jeep brand, with the new 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 and the all-new 2021 Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid arriving in dealerships soon. In the second quarter, the Grand Cherokee L will make its debut in dealership showrooms. Customers can also look forward to the all-new 2022 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer arriving in the large SUV segment as a premium extension of the brand.

Ram recorded its best ever first-quarter retail sales. In March, the Ram brand also posted its best ever monthly retail sales. Overall, Ram retail sales rose 28% in the quarter based on strong consumer demand for trucks.

For the first quarter, the Alfa Romeo brand posted a 25% gain in total sales compared with the same period last year, with sales of the Stelvio SUV increasing by 34% and the Giulia sedan by 17%. These results follow 2020 in which the Alfa Romeo brand grew both volume and market share.

Total first-quarter sales of the Chrysler brand increased 32% to 39,737 vehicles, led by the Chrysler Pacifica – America’s most capable minivan. First-quarter retail sales of Pacifica increased 57%, compared to the first quarter of 2020.

Coming off a strong 2020, Dodge Challenger and Charger continue the trend in the first quarter, with retail sales of the muscle cars up 29% year over year. The new 2021 Dodge Durango, the ultimate "no-compromise" SUV, continues to raise the bar, adding to the brand’s success both on the road and in the showroom, turning in a 61% increase in first-quarter retail sales. The top purchase reasons for Dodge vehicles are overall exterior styling, being "fun to drive" and overall power and acceleration, and Kelley Blue Book is recognizing America’s performance brand by naming Dodge the Best Car Styling Brand in the 2021 Brand Image Awards for the third year in a row. See the attached table for the breakdown of brand and nameplate sales.

  • Best March Ever: Crosstrek and Forester
  • Best Month Ever: Forester
Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 65,726 vehicle sales for March 2021, the companies best-ever March sales and a 102 percent increase compared to March 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic impacted the auto industry and global economy at large. “Subaru of America and our retailers celebrate our best-ever March sales results, as well as the best first quarter sales in our brand’s 53-year history,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO of Subaru of America, Inc. “The momentum behind this sales record is the continued trust and loyalty of our owners, which we were honored to see recognized by the 2021 Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards, which named Subaru the
Most Trusted Brand for the seventh consecutive year, Best Overall Brand for the second consecutive year (and four out of the last six years), as well as Kelley Blue Book’s Best Performance Brand for the 2nd consecutive year.”

Tesla sold every vehicle they could make. They also exceeded consensus estimates by far. Almost no Model S/X as they are still producing the new variety without any deliveries.

Tesla delivered 184,800 vehicles in the first quarter of 2021, Model S and X production dropped to zero

PUBLISHED FRI, APR 2 20218:43 AM EDTUPDATED FRI, APR 2 202111:14 AM EDT
Lora Kolodny@LORAKOLODNY

KEY POINTS
  • Tesla just reported first-quarter vehicle production and delivery numbers for 2021. In total, it delivered 184,800 vehicles and produced 180,338 cars.
  • All of the electric vehicles it produced were Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossover SUVs, though it also delivered 2,020 Model S sedans and Model X SUVs.

Tesla just reported first-quarter vehicle production and delivery numbers for 2021. In total, it delivered 184,800 vehicles and produced 180,338 cars.

Analysts were expecting Tesla to deliver around 168,000 vehicles during this period, according to estimates compiled by FactSet as of April 1. Estimates ranged from 145,000 to 188,000 deliveries.

The Q1 deliveries beat Tesla’s previous record of 180,570 deliveries last quarter.

All of the electric vehicles it produced were Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossover SUVs during the quarter, and it didn’t produce any of its more expensive Model S sedans and Model X SUVs.

It delivered 2,020 Model S and Model X vehicles from inventory, however representing just 1% of its total deliveries. In a statement, Tesla wrote that with “new equipment installed and tested in Q1” the company is now “in the early stages of ramping production” for updated versions of the S and X.

During its most recent earnings call on January 27, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said: “We have been able to bring forward the Plaid Model S and X – Model S will be delivered in February and Model X a little later.” He added that “The Model S Plaid, we’re actually in production now.”

The Model S plaid is a luxury sedan that the company promises will go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than 2 seconds, and that can seat up to seven people with third-row seats. Importantly for Tesla automotive margins, the Model S and X have a higher average sales price than the S and Y. The Model S plaid costs from $79,990 to $149,990 according to Tesla’s website.

But Tesla’s operations during the quarter ending March 31, 2021, were ultimately impacted by a fire at its Fremont, California factory, temporary closures that Musk attributed to parts shortages, a broader chip shortage in the industry, port capacity issues and the ongoing pandemic.

Tesla’s latest delivery numbers represented more than a 100% increase from the same period last year when the company first began deliveries and volume production of Model Y. However, Tesla Q1 deliveries increased by just over 2% from the quarter ending 2020 when Tesla delivered 180,570 vehicles.

Deliveries are the closest approximation to sales numbers reported by Tesla.

During the company’s most recent earnings call, CFO Zachary Kirkhorn said that in 2021: “Specifically for Q1, our volumes will have the benefit of early Model Y ramp in Shanghai. However, S and X production will be low due to the transition to the newly re-architected products.”

At an annual shareholder meeting in 2020, CEO Elon Musk told shareholders he expected deliveries to hit an implied range between 477,750 and 514,500 cars for the year. Tesla hit the mid-range of that window, delivering 499,550 cars for the year, its best sales volume to date.

Musk and Kirkhorn declined to give specific guidance for 2021 deliveries during that call but said they would offer more clarity during the second quarter. Kirkhorn said on the call: “We continue to expect a long-term volume CAGR of 50%, of which we may materially exceed this in 2021.” This goal was reiterated by Tesla’s then-President of Automotive Jerome Guillen on the same call. (Guillen has moved into the role of President of Heavy Trucking since then.)

Fans and critics will both be watching to see whether new battery electric vehicles hitting the market will begin to erode Tesla’s lead in the category, or take away more from sales of internal combustion engine and hybrid vehicles. Startups and big automakers alike are introducing more EV models than ever before.

On March 29, Jeffries reduced its price target for Tesla from $775 to $700, with analyst Philippe Houchois writing in a note:

“Legacy-free 30-50% net growth and 2-digit margin potential still support high multiples but Tesla is no longer unique as an EV play with preferred access to capital. Some of the edge started to erode, but only slowly and Tesla still leads on multiple fronts, from software to design-to-manufacture, speed of execution and direct selling.”

Hyundai/Kia now handily outselling Honda (142K vs 131K). If Acura is included they're ahead (148K) and it's doubtful Genesis would make up the difference.

quite the horse race.
