April Retail Highlights
April was also the best retail month ever, with 74,978 retail sales, up 146%. Retail sales rose for the entire lineup with SUVs (+137%), cars (+163%) and eco-friendly vehicles (+640%), all up triple digits.

“Our retailers showed their desire by delivering the best-ever April in the history of Subaru with an increase of 100.5 percent,” said Thomas J. All carlines saw gains in April 2021 which marked the twelfth consecutive month of 40,000+ vehicle sales for Subaru. Forester was the top performer by volume for the month with 19,452 sales, an increase of 106.3 percent over prior year and its best-ever April. Crosstrek and WRX/STI sales were notably strong as each carline achieved its best April ever. Crosstrek posted a 180.7 increase, while WRX/STI posted an increase of 133 percent compared to April 2020. Also, in April, the automaker celebrated the sale of the eleven-millionth Subaru vehicle in the U.S.
“We’re proud that our award-winning SUV vehicles, as well as the amazing WRX/STI, could deliver an all-time best April,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “We expect car buyers will continue to make Subaru top-of-mind this Spring, but our results will be influenced by vehicle availability due to the well-documented chip shortages impacting production throughout the auto industry.”

Mazda Reports April Sales Results
May 3, 2021IRVINE, Calif. (May 3, 2021) – Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported total April sales of 31,117 vehicles, an increase of 184.4 percent compared to April 2020. Year-to-date sales totaled 114,375 vehicles; an increase of 45.5 percent compared to the same time last year. With 26 selling days in April, compared to the same number the year prior, the company posted an increase of 48.4 percent on a Daily Selling Rate (DSR) basis.
CPO sales totaled 6,880 vehicles in April, an increase of 187 percent compared to April 2020, and achieved its best ever April.
Sales Highlights
- Sales of the CX-30 achieved its second-best month ever with 5,532 vehicles sold.
- Sales of the CX-5 achieved its best April ever with 14,883 vehicles sold.
- Sales of the CX-9 achieved its best April ever with 3,188 vehicles sold.
- CPO sales achieved its best April ever with 6,880 vehicles sold.

MAHWAH, NJ (May 3, 2021) Volvo Car USA set a new April sales record with 11,036 cars sold, up 185.5 percent over 2020 when the industry continued to see the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the eleventh consecutive month of year-over-year growth for Volvo Car USA. Year-to-date the brand is up 63.9 percent, an increase of 7,170 cars sold over the same period last year.
The entire Volvo model lineup was up year-over-year, led by the brand’s luxury SUVs, which accounted for 89 percent of total sales. Notably XC60 and XC40 sales were up year over year by 242.8 percent and 190.8 percent, respectively.
The brand’s share of Recharge models – vehicles with fully electric or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains – continued to grow, accounting for 15.7 percent of total April sales. Recharge sales in California continue to represent the largest share in the US market accounting for 47.5 percent of sales in the state.
April also saw Volvo Car USA recognized with numerous industry awards and accolades including:
- 2021 XC40 Recharge became the first fully electric small SUV to achieve an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK PLUS award, making Volvo Cars the only brand to obtain the IIHS 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK PLUS across all its models
- 2021 XC40 Recharge and XC60 Recharge plug-in hybrid were named as two of the best electric cars by Autotrader
- 2021 XC90 was recognized as one of the Best Family Cars of 2021 by Parents Magazine
- 2021 XC40 Recharge was named Best Electric Luxury Subcompact SUV by Good Housekeeping
- 2021 Volvo XC90 and S90 both earned Kelley Blue Book 5-Year Cost to Own Awards
Across the Americas region Volvo Cars achieved an overall sales increase of 200.6 percent year-over-year with 320.8 percent growth in Latin America and 303.5 percent growth in Canada.
