Post Selling car to Lexus dealer how to transfer personal license plates (California)

I'm looking to purchase a new Lexus and trade mine in to the dealer, but unsure the process to transfer my personal license plates. I know there's a DMV form to transfer the plates, hopefully I can do that at AAA. Do I leave the plates at home and risk driving to the dealer with no plates? Or do I remove them at the dealer once I finish at the paperwork and get the keys to my new car?

Any advice or experience with this is much appreciated.

I’ve done it before and the dealer handled everything. Just drove there with the plates on my car and just took them off and put them on the new car only because I didn’t like my states new plates. Now I don’t give a crap and just get new plates.

In CA just take your old plates off & mount on the next car I think you have 20 days to inform the DMV in person .

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice! I'll just get everything done while I'm at the dealer and a few of you mentioned is pretty easy.

If you have AAA, you can also do it there. They will give you new plates on the spot.

I have personal/custom license plates I plan on transferring from current car to the new one. I know there's paperwork for the transfer which I plan on going to AAA to complete.
