It’s a shame to see the Mazda 6 go. It was a really good looking car.

So Mazda Canada loses the 6, but keeps the CX-3. The press release elaborates on why the 6 was canned. As I and mmarshall talked about, Mazda has now fully shifted attention to crossovers.

Any hope for a more premium sedan replacement for the 6 has been more or less flushed down the toilet.

http://en.media.mazda.ca/2021-05-21-...GARDING-MAZDA6

MEDIA STATEMENT REGARDING MAZDA6RICHMOND HILL, ON (May. 21, 2021) – Throughout Mazda’s 100-year history, we have continually proven the ability to shift with changing market preferences, providing beautifully designed vehicles that are fun to drive in the segments consumers want. As consumer interests continue to shift towards crossover vehicles, Mazda Canada has decided to end production of the Mazda6 sedan with the current 2021 model year.

As the flagship sedan in our lineup, the Mazda6 represented premium design, performance, quality, and safety, and helped shape the brand throughout the three generations that were sold in Canada. As remarkable a vehicle as the Mazda6 was, it faced adverse conditions in an ever-shrinking segment as consumers abandoned sedans in favour of taller, more versatile crossover vehicles.

This shift toward crossover segments presents an opportunity for future growth for our brand. Mazda Canada will focus on continuously improving our award-winning CX-line of crossover vehicles, which includes the CX‑3, CX-30, CX‑5, and CX‑9. In the near future, Mazda will grow the crossover lineup with its first battery electric vehicle, the MX-30, and an upcoming all-new crossover to be produced in the U.S. These vehicles will provide the practicality and versatility that today’s buyers are seeking, paired with Mazda’s signature characteristics of premium design and craftsmanship, excellent driving dynamics, and top safety ratings.

Production of the 2021 Mazda6 for the Canadian market will end in July 2021.

Mazda 6 Wagon Carbon Edition

Mazda Australia distributes both the sedan and the wagon. The wagon is popular in the European Zone.
Mazda 6 sales have slumped in Australia. Mazda Australia sells 20 Mazda CX-5 vehicles for every one Mazda 6 sedan or wagon.

A redundant cuv and a fwd sedan being axed in the u.s. must be a day that ends in Y.

Reviewers loved the mazda 6 because it felt like and looked like the best in the few mainstream bunch.

has anyone looked at the new Kia K5 recently? Makes the mazda 6 look ancient.

Not a fan of either, so good news to me. The 6 hadn't been updated in ages and was dated all around. And my month with a rental last year left me even more unimpressed.
The CX-3/30, whatever it's called, kind of surprises me. Little crossovers seem to be a sweet part of the market right now and other manufacturers have no problem selling theirs.

Axing the 6 probably makes sense since they never had volumes to justify. That leaves Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Hyundai / Kia as the only significant players in this segment.

As of today, Chevy is still selling Malibus in that segment......still on their web site.

The Malibu is slated to end production next year, so it will likely only be on the market a few months longer than the Mazda 6.

A shame to see it go. It is actually a nicer sedan than its classic rental-car image would suggest. although its chassis-dynamics aren't in the same league as a Mazda6.

It's a fact, though (and it took me a long time to realize and accept it as well)...the sedan-market, in the U.S., is shrinking, and people are steadily shifting to crossovers. Whether this is being done deliberately by the manufacturers (axing the sedans to force more crossover-sales because of the generally higher profits per unit) to manipulate the market and take away sedan choices even if people still want them, or if the sedans are being axed because they simply don't sell even when they ARE available is open to debate. I am generally a believer in both.....that the crossover market is partly being manipulated, and partly a true effect of dwindling interest in sedans.

More will just default to the Camry. The 6 had nicer interior.

Personally I think the Mazda 6 looks better, but it is ancient...

As I can see, (a reason why I don't bother logging in ANY forum nowadays), someone is already here to rain down on Mazda's parade regarding any future plans they might have or had in store. We'll see what comes of all of it.

If this is referring to my post, I don't see how what I wrote is an unfair judgement considering the slew of cancellations and poor planning Mazda has had in the past few months (i.e. canning Mazdaspeed, the diesels they hyped up for years, and now the 6), and Mazda as a whole has never been particularly strong in their business planning even at the height of their technical prowess in the 90s (I'm sure you remember how Amati panned out).

Even if this supposed new premium midsize sedan comes out, we won't be getting it here in North America. The press release makes that more than obvious with its emphasis on how CUV's killed the 6.
