It will be interesting to see how they respond with the branding during the switch to EV as all EVs no longer have a differential to drive the wheels. EVs are all pretty equivalent due to the motors attaching directly to the wheels.

If anything, I would expect Subaru rather than Mazda to be bought by Toyota, given how they went so far as to jointly develop an EV together, in addition to past projects like the 86. Sharing a factory together won't be enough.

Right now I would place Mazda in the same boat as Jaguar- former Ford underlings who now have more independence but are having difficulties adapting to new trends and marred by their relatively small budgets and low-volume, with the only way to survive to be moving upmarket, with questionable levels of success. At least Jaguar has Land Rover to save the whole brand from being completely defunct.
