GM 2nd Quarter Sales Increase 40 Percent

2021-07-01

Print ?Subject=GM Second-Quarter Sales Inc...1-gmsales.html PDF Word Add This
  • Chevrolet Bolt EV delivers record second-quarter and first-half deliveries.
  • Buick sales rise 86 percent on strong demand for new Encore GX, redesigned Envision, and Enclave, creating the brand’s best quarter in more than 15 years.
  • GMC records best second quarter and best first half since 2005 driven by Yukon and Yukon XL.
  • Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra sales up a combined 36 percent, with light-duty models posting strong segment share gains.
  • Cadillac’s second quarter retail sales were its best since 2015.
DETROIT General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) announced today it sold 688,236 vehicles in the U.S. in the 2nd quarter of 2021 – an increase of 40 percent compared to a year ago – in a unique market bolstered by strong customer demand, but constrained by low inventories resulting from the global semiconductor shortage.

“The U.S. economy is accelerating, consumer spending is robust and jobs are plentiful,” said Elaine Buckberg, GM chief economist. “Consumer demand for vehicles is also strong, but constrained by very tight inventories. We expect continued high demand in the second half of this year and into 2022.”

“The agility and creativity of our supply chain, purchasing, engineering and manufacturing teams, in collaboration with our suppliers and dealers, have helped us continue to satisfy customers and gain market share in some of the highest demand segments of the market,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president, Sales Operations.

GM is well positioned in 2021 to lead the industry in full-size and mid-size pickup sales for the seventh consecutive year. During the quarter, GM earned 40.6 percent of the retail market for full-size pickups, up 4.5 percentage points year over year (J.D. Power PIN), with more than 237,000 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras sold in the quarter.

The company is taking steps to meet customers’ future needs, especially in capacity-constrained segments:
  • GM announced that production of HD pickups will increase by about 1,000 trucks per month beginning in mid-July as a result of production line efficiencies delivered by the team at Flint Assembly in Michigan.
  • Also, GM will return full-size pickup production to Oshawa Assembly in Canada at the end of 2021.
  • Shipments of Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size pickups built at Wentzville Assembly in Missouri increase by about 30,000 total units from mid-May through early July as the team completes dynamic vehicle testing on units held at the plant due to semiconductor supply disruptions.
“Although the situation remains fluid, we’re focused on continuing to leverage every available semiconductor to build and ship our highest demand products,” McNeil said.

GM ended the quarter with 211,974 units in inventory, down from 334,628 at the end of the first quarter.

Second-Quarter Sales Highlights (vs. Q2 2020)

Chevrolet
  • Chevrolet deliveries were up 31 percent, with the Bolt EV and Traverse both delivering their best-ever 2nd-quarter sales and best first-half sales.
  • Silverado LD deliveries increased by 31 percent, HD by 42 percent.
  • Sales of the Tahoe (74 percent), Suburban (91 percent), Silverado HD and LD combined (34 percent), Trailblazer (248 percent) and Corvette (224 percent) were all up sharply.
To continue building customer interest in electric vehicles and demand for the all-electric 2022 Bolt EUV and redesigned Bolt EV, Chevrolet will cover standard installation of Level 2 charging outlets through a collaboration with Qmerit for most qualified and eligible purchase and lease customers.

The Bolt EUV is also the first Chevrolet to feature Super Cruise, GM’s advanced driver-assistance technology, which uses Adaptive Cruise Control, Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking and lane-centering technology to enable hands-free driving on compatible roads. GM plans to expand Super Cruise availability to 22 models by 2023.

GMC
  • GMC deliveries grew by 50 percent, led by gains from Sierra LD and HD models, up 38 and 46 percent, respectively.
  • The all-new Yukon and Yukon XL had a combined increase of 126 percent.
  • Acadia sales were up 72 percent and Terrain sales increased 19 percent.
Buick
  • Buick’s premium SUVs recorded a total sales increase of 86 percent, leading to its best quarter in more than 15 years.
  • The all-new Buick Envision attracts more former sedan buyers to the brand than any other Buick model, leading to the vehicle’s best quarter ever with total sales up 97 percent.
  • The Encore GX also had a record quarter, with sales up 184 percent, and Enclave sales grew 103 percent. Building on this momentum, Buick is launching an all-new 2022 Enclave this fall.
Cadillac
  • Total sales increased by 55 percent, leading to Cadillac’s third consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth.
  • The XT5 and XT6 had total sales increases of 83 and 73 percent, respectively, and sales of the CT4 increased by 290 percent.
  • Sales of the Escalade more than doubled, up 120 percent.
Fleet Highlights

GM fleet sales, which were severely impacted by pandemic shutdowns a year ago, are beginning to recover as the company prioritizes production of its most in-demand vehicles.

Fleet deliveries were up 69 percent year over year in the second quarter.
  • Small business sales increased 43 percent.
  • Sales to commercial customers increased 73 percent, driven by increases of mid-size pickup sales, up 97 percent; full-size pickups, up 96 percent; full-size vans, up 74 percent; and the Silverado MD, up 57 percent.
GM fleet sales were about 14 percent of total sales, which is lower than the company’s pre-pandemic fleet mix of about 20 percent, due to supply constraints caused by the semiconductor shortage. Rental sales represented 4 percent of GM’s total sales.

General Motors (NYSE:GM) is a global company focused on advancing an all-electric future that is inclusive and accessible to all. At the heart of this strategy is the Ultium battery platform, which will power everything from mass-market to high-performance vehicles. Mitsubishi Motors North America Announces 2nd-Quarter 2021 Sales Growth

  • Second quarter 2021 total sales up 106% year-over-year
  • First-half 2021 sales up 12% year-over-year
  • June total sales up 54% year-over-year, third-best June in 10 years
  • Best-ever June retail-only sales for Outlander and Eclipse Cross as all-new 2022 Outlander and redesigned 2022 Eclipse Cross availability increases
  • Best-ever total first-half sales for Outlander Sport and Mirage
FRANKLIN, Tenn. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) today reported strong second quarter sales of 25,146, a 106% increase compared with Q2 of 2020. First-half sales of 53,377 were up nearly 12% over the same period last year, as the brand focused on retail sales of its highest-specification models to minimize the impact of the global chip shortage.

With one of the freshest line-ups in the industry seeing every vehicle in the showroom redesigned or all-new, MMNA's dealer partners are reporting steadily increasing demand from buyers. With a return to pre-pandemic shopping patterns across the nation, all of MMNA's individual vehicle lines saw year-over-year sales increases compared to the same quarter of 2020.

News and Notes
  • MMNA sales throughout the quarter increased in strength month by month, driven by availability of 2022 Outlander and Eclipse Cross. June alone represented an increase of 53.6% over June of 2020, and the third-best June in the last 10 years. Considering supply constraints, this illustrates the strength of the retail-demand recovery.
  • Considering retail-only sales (non-fleet), June 2021 saw the best-ever June sales for Outlander and Eclipse Cross carlines, and brand-wide, greater volume than June of 2020 and 2019. This represented the second-best retail-only June for MMNA since 2007. MMNA continues to focus distribution efforts to ensure its dealer partners have an adequate supply of new vehicles for customers.
  • With availability of the all-new 2022 Outlander and redesigned 2022 Eclipse Cross increasing steadily, sales of these well-received new vehicles improved month-over-month across the quarter.
  • With sales of 23,983 across the first half of 2021, Outlander Sport recorded its best first-half performance ever.
  • Despite predictions that consumers have turned away from passenger cars, Mirage's first-half 2021 performance is the strongest first-half for the nameplate since 2001.
  • Priced from $25,7951, the all-new 2022 Outlander started arriving on dealer lots in March, and as supply meets demand, will have a significant impact on total sales.
  • Starting at $23,3951, the sporty, sleek and restyled 2022 Eclipse Cross also gained momentum through the quarter, going on sale in early March.
  • Earlier this year, MMNA announcing it ranked third highest among mass-market brands in the J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Customer Service Index Study.
  • MMNA recently unveiled ClickShop℠, a 24-hour digital showroom hosted on mitsubishicars.com. Customers now have a shopping experience customized to their needs, interests and budget, designed to make the car-buying experience fast, fair and fun. With ClickShop, buying a new Mitsubishi is now as simple as "click, click, car."

It's interesting to me how Lexus's biggest YoY sales increases were in the "car" division.. seems a lot of this was owed to the refreshed IS and LS as well as the ES.

Not sure how much of that is post-2020 resurgence or just improved marketing/customer image.

Highlander is up massive. So is Tacoma. I think the car sales are up because price points are probably high because of the global chip shortage. A lot of brands no longer have cars to sell at a lower price point. What do you think?

Interesting how different we view the numbers. I personally thought it should be way higher considering literally no one was buying cars last June. Outside of the expected new models (Rav4 Prime, Sienna, & Venza) Toyota Hybrids were pretty much flat overall which again to me isn't impressive considering the state of the market last June.

I guess numbers always have to be viewed in context. The numbers for the year are on pace for 570K total sold. Worldwide I think Toyota sells 2 million hybrids. There is no way Toyota would be where they are without hybrids.

Some increases are impressive like the Camry hybrid (and even prius prime, wow), but the Sienna and Venza are new, and contributing a ton of hybrid sales. Interestingly sales of the rav4 hybrid and prime combined plummeted.

I agree with that. Also, hybrids now give toyota 'sping room' defining 'apv' (alternatively powered vehicles) and 'electrified' vehicles as a way to counter the straight EV narrative. Regardless, a ton of people are buying toyotaa/lexus!

In tiny but important numbers the LC convertible is a big hit, having caused LC sales to triple.

Cadillac
  • Total sales increased by 55 percent, leading to Cadillac’s 3rd consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth.

SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. REPORTS JUNE AND Q2 2021 SALES

  • 2nd-quarter sales increase 20 percent over 2020

Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 42,877 vehicle sales for June 2021, a 20.5 percent decrease compared to June 2020 due to reduced inventory resulting from the global microchip shortage. The automaker also reported second-quarter sales of 321,250, a 20.3 percent gain compared with the same period in 2020.

“Given our inventory at this time, we were pleased with the June sales results our nimble retailers worked hard to deliver, and we thank them for their efforts,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “This past month we were also proud to release our Corporate Impact Report, which showcases the many ways Subaru is More Than a Car Company not only for our Subaru owners, but for our communities nationwide.”

Outback was the top performer by volume for the month with 16,394 sales, an increase of 60 percent over June 2020. WRX/STI achieved 2,354 sales, an increase of 8.5 percent compared to the same month a year ago. For the first half of the year, Forester posted an 11.8 percent increase, while both Outback and Crosstrek carlines posted an increase of 40 percent compared to Q2 2020.

“While the global microchip shortage affecting the automotive industry continues to pose challenges, our retailer network went above and beyond to deliver the very best for our customers in June,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “We are especially pleased to offer competitive pricing on two 2022 models with an extensive roster of amenities – the Ascent, including the new Onyx Edition, and the Impreza – giving car buyers another reason to choose Subaru.”
