True, I actually thought of the S2000 as I posted that lol. 9k redline? There are plenty of 4 cylinders made over the years that are dead reliable as anything, too.

Agree that it's just deplorable and pathetic on an AMG. And any 4 cylinder in a Mercedes Benz for that matter.

those AMG 4 bangers are going to be tuned to an inch of their life with all the boost they are packing into it to get those numbers.

yea porsche went 4 banger, buyers got pissed and porsche offered the 6 cylinder on GTS models again

I just can’t believe Mercedes-Benz now has a AMG A class 4 cylinder model built on a fwd platform…

It's going to be named the C63, and you'll see the powertrain debut in Munich. No troll there.

Porsche went 4 cylinder on the 718 I believe, Porsche fans don't generally care for it based on what I know from a few Porsche-obsessed.
The reviews have actually been quite positive.

Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA45 Review 2021 | Top Gear

Heavy-handed in its performance and ride quality, but with way more depth and finesse than its predecessor
www.topgear.com
"It’s a modern-day Mitsubishi Lancer Evo! Well, it’s not. But the spirit of those early noughties rally reps is here in abundance, even if it’s buried beneath layers of chintz where Japanese sports saloons were plastic (and proud) once you’d clambered inside."

2020 Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 Review: Grown Up, Giggle-Inducing

The Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 four-door coupe is more mature than its predecessor, but as we learned in our review, it hasn’t forgotten how to have fun.
www.motor1.com
"What's the verdict?
“The outlandish performance remains, but there's way more finesse than its predecessor”
This is a car transformed. The old CLA45 wasn’t exactly shoddy, but once you’d got over its head-scrambling acceleration it felt like it didn’t have too many layers left to peel back. This second go possesses much more depth and sophistication; it’ll play the all-weather practical card when you want it, and something altogether sillier when you’re in the right mood.
Just like the finest examples of the Evo and Impreza did fifteen (or more) years ago. Alright, this is quite different in its demeanour: you’ll do well to keep it below £60k, and there’s a focus on interior comfort and tech that Mitsubishi and Subaru rarely bothered with. But nevertheless, this is proof that AMG’s engineers have got their head around making a saloon car that isn’t possessing RWD and a big burly V8 actual fun to drive. And you can have an estate…"

We're on year 7 of this being the case...I think the market has come to terms with it.

Funny that a 4-cylinder Mercedes has one of the biggest enthusiast followings. One sold for close $200k this year: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...volution-ii-5/

As a business, I get it. As an enthusiast, no 4 cylinder car will ever capture my heart.

It's a sign of the times. BMW and Audi do the same things with their 2 Series and A3 (I think the RS3 is a 5 cylinder but the same concept). Cars like these might be better received in other markets.

Forget the other markets, they're doing great here in the U.S.! People seem to be grumbling about these compact 4-cylinder cars and buying them in similar amounts.

People are buying the cheaper 4 cylinder models such as base C class, but they aren't lining up to buy 4 cylinder AMGs.

So you're saying they made a second-gen CLA45 and GLA45, then added an additional GLA35, CLA35, A35, and GLB35 because the demand wasn't there? Clearly they seem to be selling enough to double down. A large segment of AMG buyers just want the most expensive version of whatever model they're buying, even if it has a turbo 4 cylinder.

I dont know the sales figures, but I only saw the CLA43 or 45 once or twice.

The most expensive AMG models are also a cash cow for Mercedes, discontinuing them is a dumb move.

That's the problem with anecdotes. In any event, they're not discontinuing the most expensive AMG models they're just having supply issues. The C63 was announced as going to 4-cylinder turbo hybrid way before this. The rest of the vehicles effected by this supply issue are not slated to lose their V8s until the end of their model runs which are several years out from now except for the GT63. And that model is getting the V8 hybrid first as a swan song.

There’s a difference between the “light” AMGs and the serious AMGs like the C63. I don’t see the enthusiasts who pay $90k for a C63 being excited about the 4 cyl

We agree on that. The worst part of it all is that this hybrid powertrain is no doubt going to be very heavy.

As MB abandons V8s, pretty slick move on the part of Lexus to offer a V8 in the lower end of the line up. Differentiate and Lexus stands out well
