Default Recommended Service Provider/Mechanic? Safe to ask for one?

I tried searching threads to no avail, but wondered if it's appropriate to ask about a competent mechanic for specific locations in the US? Is there a thread on this I'm not finding, or a no no? I want to perform as much of my own maintenance as possible, but there are certain jobs I'd like to have a professional perform, but don't want to trust an unknown location. My local Lexus dealer, only one in town, has mixed reviews. I'd love to find a trusted mechanic close to me.......

Totally ok. I would probably suggest the Southeast Regional forum though, since your location says you're in South Carolina. You will be more likely to get a relevant response from folks in your area.
