Sure, I agree. My old Explorer had 2WD, 4WD auto which was multi-mode full time you could use all the time, and 4WD low which had a locking transfer case.
That setup is perfect IMO, gives you all the options. You can switch from 2WD to 4WD Auto and back at any speed in any situation. 4WD low you had to stop and put it in neutral.

They used to call that "Shift-on-the-Fly." I agree that, for most SUVs, it is the ideal set-up....and as for the low range, the fact that you had to stop and put it in Neutral first was usually no big deal because low-range is rarely used (or needed) unless off-road.
But, of course, full-time and switchable-electronic 4WD/AWD is not the cheapest to produce and manufacture. That is why automakers resisted it for so long in so many vehicles, and why, for decades, until recently, all you could get in Jeep Wranglers was the Part-Time Command-Trac 4WD, without a center differential. As has been extensively discussed in this thread, the part-time systems are still found in some pickups and ruck-based vehicles, notably from Toyota.

I'm about to go crosseyed from all the 4WD talk. No "auto" mode is inexcusable, it's 30 year old tech...or close to it.
Rear area is a mess, I also wish this came with the base engine bc I would skip the hybrid personally. Hybrid is powerful but it's not being really raved over, MT or C&D said it's nothing like the difference between the old 4.6 vs. 5.7 in the old Tundra. Nor would I want the hybrid complexity, even Toyota.

LOL this just popped up on my Facebook, to buy the part. This is what I've got, I believe my gen Yukon came out in 1999 and I'm pretty sure the later versions of previous gen had it too. One thing to note is that you can tow my GMC on all 4 wheels, while you can't my LX.

GM used to have full time 4WD. In 1970s. You could choose either full time or part time
Cadillac Escalade had a Auto 4WD back in 1996 Chevy GMC as well.

On the F-150, 4A is available on the Lariat and above(at least on the 2015-2020 models, not sure about the current gen).
So mine does not have this feature.
Trucks with the 4A have a selector like this
