It will surely simplify maintenance if parts are more interchangeable among brands, which could also reduce the cost of maintenance. I've often wondered how part sstores can keep up with stocking key maintenance components for such a large number of makes/models/years. Standardization of parts will me beneficial on multiple fronts for design, production and maintenance.
