It would be helpful to know which years he is interested in. To somewhat answer your question, I did a very quick Google search and came across this site, which has a handy comparison tool.

If you're willing to do more legwork via search engines, you can find articles written by various auto journalists that go into more detail. Or you can join an MB-specific forum that might already have this information posted.

same old replies...

german cars suck
get a reliable lexus
save money and get a mazda

my $0.02...

i know MANY people with recent mercedes who have had ZERO issues. i don't know how old a used car the OP is seeking, but an off lease c/e/glc/gle should be just fine.

I recommend to lease a new German car - it will cost you similar $$$ to buying one used with no headaches.
Too much $$$ for a lease and an extended warranty will be purchased. The car will be driven short distances.

I talked to my father and they went into a Lexus dealer today. She wants white exterior and tan interior with black accents. They were told that this option was discontinued in I think he said 2016. The white ES had a darker brown in it. It is hard to figure out what they are looking at because they look at a car and I ask was it an ES or a LS and he tells me it was a medium size sedan that was $79K. I don't know the new $ numbers without looking but an ES would be MSRP for that price?

Thanks for the link. They are open to a 2-5 year old car.

It would be helpful if you could list what's gone wrong with the BMW X3 and what year it is. I will be better able to gauge what qualifies as "unreliable" to your mother based on that. I must say I'm surprised, the 2016+ X3 with the I4 is generally a solid car.

2008, he mentioned transmission was partially rebuilt and coolant reservoir was leaking so replaced and then the sensor for that went out. Also mentioned some other sensor issues but I don't know all of the details.

I think this would be something to consider with the color scheme she wants.
SW17LS I recall you did not want this year and I do not remember why you chose the 2017 besides price. I am not seeing many of the newer models on the road and recall it was a Lexus disappointment?

This car is in the same city as them so she can look at.

Please not the cayenne. There's a reason why they're cheap over here.

Anyways, haven't heard of any major issues with the M276-engined (facelift w212) E350s. DI with no port injection but... let's say that it's on the IS250-side of the issue (i.e. very unlikely that you'll ever have to decarbon the thing, MB did their homework). No clue about the turbo versions.

That makes sense. The 2016-2018 X3s in particular are very solid from a reliability standpoint. In any event, if a Mercedes E350/E300 is on the table, I would recommend the 2016 (last model year of the previous body style) or 2018+ E300s. Beware that you will have the odd sensor issue here and there but nothing catastrophic on these models.

I much prefer the LS460 to the LS500, but she should drive the 500 and see what she thinks. its smaller inside, sportier, firmer...she may like that.

Totally unrelated to the cost of ownership. I mean, if you want one, do your research and if you can afford to own it, go ahead.
