70 dB. So according to Alex the Pacifica is quieter than the LS500. He tests at a lower speed than I do, and wind noise sets into the Pacifica about 70 MPH so that explains why I measured the LS500 as being 1dB quieter.

But no, the LS500 is nowhere near as quiet as an LS460, S Class, 7 Series, A8 etc. He measured 68 dB for the S560, 68.5 for the S580, 68.5 for the G90, 68.5 for the 7 Series, 69 for a GLS, etc
in the video at the point you mentioned, he says it's a) likely the tires, b) it's noticeable on bad roads, c) on good roads it's just as quiet as other flagships, d) i suspect it was a deliberate decision by lexus to not make this a total cocoon. the ls500 is clearly meant to 'seem' sportier than previous LS's even if it's not really that sporty. (edit: i now see this is a video for the ls500h not the ls500)

similarly, i was surprised my lc500 lets as much road noise into the cabin as it does. again, it's not bad on good roads when cruising, but the run flats are definitely noisy on bad surfaces and the LC doesn't have double-pane side glass.

anyway, thanks for providing the videos and info on LS vs. Pacifica and others. since i won't be buying either i don't really care.

Did you miss where I also said replacing the tires would help? The road surface where I test sound pressure is pretty smooth, and I measured 1dB less than my Pacifica, still nowhere near as quiet as the other flagships or the LS460.

I suspect also it was Lexus' decision to do this, like most of their other decisions when designing that car I think it was a mistake and it lost them my business and many other people's business.

Lexus has never been good at insulating from road noise. Thats the primary difference between my S560 and LS460L, Mercedes is much better at that. Thats why I have always been so careful to choose the right tires for a Lexus and to replace the tires when its new. After replacing the tires on the S560 when it was new, I probably wouldn't do that again because it didnt make any difference. On the right tires a Lexus is as quiet as you will find. The wrong tires have you thinking something is wrong with it.

Thanks for being passive aggressive when shown to be incorrect. How about we start to understand that Steve knows what he's talking about when it comes to stuff like this, hmm? The Pacifica is actually a pretty quiet vehicle, its the quietest minivan for sure, and just as quiet as any mainstream crossover.

At speed, they're going to be the same. Same argument when you said the LS600hL would be quieter than all the other flagship sedans. Why would the LS600hL be quieter than the LS460 but the LS500h be louder than the LS500? Because it fits your narrative isn't an answer. They're the same car, only difference is one is a hybrid and one isn't and that makes the way they sound when accelerating different. Hybrid is definately louder when accelerating but they are the same at cruise. How do I know? Because I've driven them and measured.

I was right, no big deal.

Saw the new G90 today. Doesn’t have the presence of the Germans. (Nowhere close). To me, it looks like Hyundai benchmarked the Lexus LS500 which makes the G90 look 5-6 years old in design. I look at the interior, the screens look fantastic but the HVAC lacks modern styling. Also the interior door panels do not look modern and contemporary with the large piece of wood on the door. For some reason, there is a hideous 4WD badge or it is supposed to be Awd on the rear that reminded me of badging from the 1980s

Also, the door handles were all stuck in the open position (or is it supposed to be that way)

Its very impressive, but saying its the quietest car in the segment isn't accurate by his own measurements.
That test might have just been his own subjective impressions, or there's something else he isn't telling us (i.e. different road conditions). Alex's numbers have always been a bit questionable, especially when it comes to other aspects like acceleration. He's the only journalist I'm even aware of that has gotten the LS500 from 0-60 in under 5 seconds, something he also mentioned in this video.

An LS500 sub 5 seconds? Yeah.....okay then. They can barely and I mean BARELY beat a 460 for 0-60 and it's not even guaranteed if the 460 has good tires and is a RWD SWB version.

He always tests cars on the same stretch of road, what he said just wasn't backed up by his own numbers.

He said the G90 was the quietest vehicle he had ever tested with a dB reading of 68.5 and that’s not true, he’s tested lots of vehicles that he has reported 68.5 and even 68.

Ah got ya. Alex gets a little too excited for Hyundai products. Likes to promote them, but it all has to do with demographics on his channel. I doubt the G90 is quieter than the LS

Oh I’m sure it’s much quieter than the LS500. The LS500 isn’t very quiet. LS460 my guess is it’s about the same.
