  • GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban sales up a combined 26 percent for the year
  • Cadillac Escalade sales rose 65 percent versus 2020
  • Enclave, Envision and Encore GX drove Buick sales up 10 percent versus 2020
DETROIT General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) and its dealers delivered 2.2 million vehicles in 2021, with Chevrolet and GMC cementing the company’s eighth consecutive year of combined full-size and midsize pickup sales leadership, second consecutive year as the full-size pickup sales leader and its 21st consecutive year as the market leader in full-size SUVs.

In addition, Cadillac Escalade deliveries rose 65 percent versus 2020 and a bevy of new and redesigned models helped drive Buick sales to the highest level since 2019. GM’s commercial truck business registered gains in key areas, including Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty sales, which were up 39 percent. GM’s total sales were down about 13 percent year over year because of semiconductor supply chain issues.

“All year we focused on delivering as many of our high demand, capacity-constrained products as possible and the strategy worked,” said Steve Carlisle, GM executive vice president and president, GM North America. “Our dealers and our engineering, supply chain, manufacturing and brand teams moved mountains to satisfy as many customers as possible in 2021, despite record low inventories caused by semiconductor supply chain issues during the third and fourth quarters.”

“In 2022, we plan to take advantage of the strong economy and anticipated improved semiconductor supplies to grow our sales and share. We will also further strengthen our industry leadership in trucks and begin our drive to EV leadership in North America with the rollouts of the GMC HUMMER EV, Cadillac LYRIQ and the reveals of the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV,” Carlisle said.

Chevrolet and GMC will stay on offense in the full-size pickup market in 2022 with new designs, the rollout of Super Cruise and more capacity, highlighted by the following:
  • GM Canada re-opened its Oshawa Assembly plant and began building Chevrolet Silverado HD pickups in the fourth quarter of 2021.
  • Mid-year will see the arrival of the new 2022 Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD. The redesigned pickups will feature new interiors, will generate lower greenhouse gas emissions, add new off-road and luxury packages, and include the addition of Super Cruise as an option for the first time.
  • Both brands are preparing all-electric pickups, including the Chevrolet Silverado EV, which will be revealed virtually on Jan. 5, during the Consumer Electronics Show.
GM expects economic growth in the U.S. and improving semiconductor availability to help drive U.S. total light industry sales from around 15 million in 2021 to around 16 million in 2022.

“The key constraint for sales continues to be reduced inventory levels as a result of the semiconductor shortage. Those inventory levels are beginning to recover against a backdrop of strong fundamental demand conditions, with ample job openings, high household savings and low interest rates," said Elaine Buckberg, GM chief economist. “Consumers want to drive as much as before the pandemic, based on recent high levels of vehicle usage. High vehicle usage and deferred sales mean pent up demand for new vehicles in the millions and building. That pent up demand will support sales as vehicle supply improves.”

Full-Year 2021 Highlights (vs. 2020)
  • Combined sales of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra LD and HD were 768,689. The company’s share of the retail market in 2021 was approximately 39 percent, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates and about 10 points higher than the next closest competitor.
  • GM has led the industry in retail sales in the full-size pickup segment every year since 2003, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates.
  • Commercial fleet sales of full-size pickups increased 10 percent, while Medium Duty trucks were up 30 percent. Commercial sales of GM full-size SUVs (up 59 percent) and midsize pickups (up 37 percent) also increased significantly.
  • Sales of GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban were up a combined 26 percent to more than 238,000 vehicles.
  • Cadillac Escalade had its best sales since 2007.
  • Chevrolet Corvette sales were up 53 percent, for the supercar’s best annual sales since 2015.
  • Chevrolet Trailblazer sales were up 163 percent to more than 90,000 units.
  • Sales of Buick’s new crossover lineup increased 12.3 percent, led by Encore GX (up 59 percent) and Envision (up 33 percent).
  • GM’s strong mix of truck and SUV sales and lower incentives helped deliver average transaction prices (ATP) of about $45,000, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates. Sales incentives were down 41 percent to about 7.2 percent of ATP.
  • Combined sales of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV were up 20 percent to 24,828 units. Sales of the Bolt EV have been paused since September 2021 as the company focuses on repairing recalled vehicles.
Fourth-Quarter 2021 Highlights (vs. 2020)

GM and its dealers sold 440,745 vehicles in the fourth quarter, down 43 percent compared with the fourth quarter of 2020, which was GM’s best quarter for retail sales since 2007.

GM entered the quarter with record low inventories; however, the company’s fourth-quarter production and wholesale deliveries were up significantly from the third quarter as semiconductor supply conditions improved. Dealer inventory, including in-transit units on their way to dealers, was 128,757 units at the end of the third quarter and 199,662 at the end of the fourth quarter.

Despite low inventories, several vehicle lines posted total sales increases including the Chevrolet Tahoe (up 8 percent), Chevrolet Suburban (up 3 percent), Buick Envision (up 10 percent), Cadillac Escalade (up 2 percent) and the Chevrolet Silverado MD (up 5 percent).

General Motors (NYSE:GM) is a global company focused on advancing an all-electric future that is inclusive and accessible to all. At the heart of this strategy is the Ultium battery platform, which will power everything from mass-market to high-performance vehicles. General Motors, its subsidiaries and its joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Chevrolet,Buick,GMC,Cadillac, Baojun and Wuling brands. January 4, 2022 , Camden, N.J. -

SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. REPORTS DECEMBER AND 2021 YEAR-END SALES RESULTS

  • December 2021 – Best month ever for BRZ
Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 51,146 vehicle sales for December 2021, a 19.5 percent decrease compared with December 2020 (63,558) as Subaru continues to face supply chain shortages. For the full year, Subaru sold 583,810 vehicles, a 4.6 percent decrease compared with calendar year 2020. These results are reflective of the impact the semiconductor shortage has had on the automobile industry.

“2021 is now in the record books and we know it could have been so much better had we not had to deal with the microchip shortage and the continuing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO of Subaru of America, Inc. “While it wasn’t the year we were expecting, our retailers, distributor partners and colleagues at Subaru of America and Subaru Corporation stepped up to the challenge and delivered an industry leading purchase and ownership experience to our customers. We look forward to improving conditions in 2022 which should allow us to return to growth mode.”

In 2021, Forester was the top performer by volume with 154,723 annual sales, followed closely by Outback with 154,623 vehicle sales. Crosstrek finished the year with sales of 127,466, up 6.5 percent compared to 2020. The 3-row Ascent SUV added 59,980 annual sales in 2021. On the performance side, the automaker’s WRX/STI models achieved annual sales of 27,141, a 28 percent increase, while BRZ added 2,320 sales, a two (2) percent increase compared with 2020. The BRZ sports coupe, redesigned for MY2022, also achieved its best December ever.

“2021 was a challenging year for the automotive industry and our Subaru retailers rallied to achieve solid results,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “For 2022, we’re confident our production capability will improve, and an exciting lineup of new vehicles, including the all-new Wilderness models in the Forester and Outback carlines, the all-new BRZ and WRX, as well as the first ever Subaru EV, the Solterra, continues to build enthusiasm and interest in Subaru.”

With 5 completely new or refreshed models launched in 2021 – including the BRZ, Forester, Forester Wilderness, Outback Wilderness, and WRX – the Subaru brand is poised to attract new customers while continuing to deliver safety, versatility and reliability to its loyal customer base. The all-new 2023 Subaru Solterra EV, featuring the automaker’s legendary standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and an estimated EV range of more than 220 miles, will be available in mid-2022.

Mitsubishi Motors Reports Strong 4th Quarter, Full-Year Sales Success

January 04, 2022

Share
  • Fourth quarter 2021 sales up 68.3% year-over-year
  • 2021 calendar year sales up 16.8% year-over-year
  • Outlander retail sales represent best-ever quarter and single month (December)
FRANKLIN, Tenn.– Having recently celebrated 40 years of business operations in the United States, Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) today reported strong sales across the full 4th quarter, which ushered in a successful close to 2021. Fourth quarter total sales of 24,861 represented an increase of 68.3% over the same period in 2020. Full-year 2021 total sales were 102,037, an increase of 16.8% over 2020, and the fourth time the brand has topped 100,000 sales since 2007.

MMNA's flagship vehicle, the all-new 2022 Outlander, which launched on Amazon Live in February 2021, led the brand's sales success. Outlander started the 4th quarter strong, with retail October sales representing a best-ever October. The vehicle went on to post its best-ever retail monthly sales performance in the 20-year history of the nameplate in December, leading to a record of 12,606 total sales for the quarter. For the full calendar year, Outlander posted 33,883 total sales, an increase of 24.9% over the previous year, and representing 33.2% of the brand's total volume.

Each month of the fourth quarter was noteworthy, with October's total sales representing the best October since 2007, November being the second-best since 2006, and December being the third-best since 2006.

Strong full-year total sales results were posted by much of Mitsubishi Motors' recently refreshed line-up, despite continued supply challenges: Mirage/Mirage G4 sales of 22,741 represented an increase of 18.8%; Outlander Sport sales of 34,216 represented an increase of 18.7%; Outlander PHEV sales of 2,250 represented an increase of 14.6%.

The full year of 2021 was marked by the brand celebrating the launch of the all-new 2022 Outlander and refreshed 2022 Eclipse Cross, the 40th anniversary of MMNA's operations in the U.S., continued growth and investment by dealer partners refreshing facilities in line with the brand's Visual Identity program, customers moving toward online buying (and MMNA's development of its Click Shop online tool to facilitate that), and supply issues that caused historic shortages of key components and challenged global shipping logistics.

Demand outstripped supply throughout the year, especially on the fast-moving Outlander. As the entire auto industry is experiencing, MMNA's inventory going into the new year remains far below ideal levels and well below customer demand.

News and Notes
  • Mitsubishi Motors debuted the all-new 2022 Outlander flagship SUV in February 2021, the best-equipped, most connected vehicle the company has ever sold. The vehicle has since been named a Wards 10 Best Interiors winner, “Vehicle of the Year” by Victory & Reseda and earned a TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
  • Mitsubishi Motors placed third among 32 automotive brands in the 2021 JD Power Initial Quality Study, which denotes vehicle quality from car buyers following 90-days of ownership. Additionally, Outlander Sport placed second overall in the Small SUV segment. The company also placed 3rd in the JD Power 2021 Customer Service Index Study.
  • Mitsubishi Motors was named the Most-Improved Brand in Reputation's “2021 Automotive Reputation Report” – which analyzed 35,000 automotive OEM brands, dealer groups and dealerships across the United States, Canada and Europe.
  • Following the launch of the 2022 Outlander, Mitsubishi unveiled an all-new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant with North American sales planned for the second half of 2022. The vehicle, which historically has been one of the best-selling PHEVs worldwide, underscores Mitsubishi's environmental commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 40 percent by 2030 and achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by 2050, also announced this year.

Fast-Growing Kia Beats Previous Annual Sales Record Set in 2016 by 8.3-Percent; Sales of Kia’s Hybrid and Battery-Electric Vehicles Nearly Doubled Year-Over-Year

IRVINE, Calif., January 3, 2022 – Kia America today announced December sales of 48,506 units, pushing the company’s annual total past the 700,000 mark for the first time in company history. Kia’s 2021 performance represents a 20-percent increase over last year with five of the brand’s most popular sedan, SUV and crossover models – Forte, Niro EV, Seltos, Sportage and Telluride – reaching all-time annual sales records.

In addition, 2021 saw a big jump in demand for Kia’s hybrid and battery-electric vehicles, sales of which were up 97-percent year-over-year.

“Announcing best-ever annual sales is always a moment of pride, but for Kia to reach such heights in light of the ongoing pandemic and supply chain issues clearly illustrates the strength of our product line-up and the demand we have created for the Kia brand throughout 2021,” said Eric Watson, vice president, sales operations, Kia America. “With arrival of the all-new, all-electric EV6 and all-new Sportage in the first half of 2022, it is clear we are ‘firing on all cylinders…and battery cells.’”

In addition to sales, December saw a number of significant announcements coming from the brand, including:
  • The Telluride SUV named “Edmunds Top Rated SUV” for the third consecutive year
    • The Kia Telluride and Seltos SUVs announced as repeat category winners of Kelley Blue Book’s Best Buy Awards, marking three years in a row for Telluride (Best 3-Row Midsize SUV) and two for Seltos (Best Subcompact SUV)
      • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certifying a maximum all-electric range (AER) of 310 miles for the 2022 Kia EV6 when equipped with a 77.4 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive
        • The Telluride SUV and Carnival MPV received The Car Connection’s annual “Best Car To Buy” awards with Telluride taking “Best Family Car To Buy 2022” and Carnival as “Best Minivan To Buy 2022.”
