However of course I want the big engine version and loaded, then I realized that the price on these vehicles can get steep and top out at $50K or more.

You can order a Volvo S60R with leather, bi-xenons, AWD, active chassis, 13" Brembos x4, 300 hp, and navigation for UNDER $40k. If you opt for the 6-speed you'll have a 5.4 second (0-60) AWD car that can be boosted to 355 hp (4.8 seconds) for $1k and 5 minutes of your time.
Thanks.

UPDATED LIST
OK, based on all these great suggestions, the preferred list as of today is (in order of preference):
1. Toyota Highlander Limited (2004)
2. Toyota 4Runner Limited (2004)
3. Volvo XC90 SUV (2004)
I still can't decide!
Thanks again for all your help!

The asking price was $51,000.00
I traded pretty much even.

The Volvo XC90 is a nice vehicle but if short-term resale is a consideration I would hold off until this time next year when the high-output Yamaha-designed V8 debuts for Volvo (XC90 and S80.) If you plan to keep this vehicle for several years then it won't matter if you get a XC90 now.
Again, I highly recommend the S60R as it fits your requirements and according to Car and Driver I think it's the only thing suggested so far that has more grip in the corners than an Audi S4 or BMW M3 (I've been waiting for the debut of the V8 Lexus IS but I've just about given up and after trying the rest I'm down to M3 SMG or S60R 6-speed). Take a look:

Or comb the forums here: http://www.swedespeed.com
Of course if you're not in a hurry I highly recommend Volvo's Overseas Delivery program. With exceptions for brand new models you generally pay FACTORY invoice (same as the dealer) for the vehicle and MSRP for options. You'll save thousands and get a free mini-vacation to boot (airfare for two, first night hotel, shipping, insurance, etc. are all included for free.)
I own a T6 I bought this way but after 4 years I'm ready for a change. I really thought the next GS or possibly IS would do it for me but I just can't wait that long. I'm in a bind as most of the cars I would consider are due for a change in the next year or so (M3 going to a V8, C32 going to a V8, Lexus GS being replaced, Audi A6 being replaced, new 5 series too ugly and expensive for what you get, etc.)
Oh well...

As someone else already mentioned: Honda Pilot.
Very "low-key", reliable, and car-like.
If you do get over the "minivan image", then definately look at the Toyota Sienna. I'm 17, but still have so much fun driving it
