It's got the origina OEM stand for the hard top, so that's good. 2 keys with a used car is always a great sign. I think it may be possible in this situation. From what I've seen the inside is way cleaner than the last one I drove. I can't wait to just stare at it. I'm never gonna sell it and have no kids to hand it down to so I'll just piddle around town with it knowing I'm driving one of the best Mercedes ever made. Benz indy shop literally 3 minutes from my house. Big deal if it needs repairs every now and then, I just want the thing in my garage. Soft top has been replaced, also a good sign.

The replaced soft top is a huge selling point, it's a really complex system that can be 1000s to have repaired

Yep, apparently there are 12 hydraulic cylinders for that top.... I'm sure it's not cheap to replace.

Guy hasn't gotten back to my guy yet but it's July 4. As long as Mercedes clears it I'm there to buy it right after, check in hand.

Happy 4th everyone, BTW. We went to the lake boat watching and hung out at the park.

I don't know that the fact that the top has been replaced also means that the hydraulics have been serviced or replaced. Ask for receipts for the work.

Good to know I’m not the only person who loves the R129. I was born in 93 so this one of the cars that I’ve wanted forever and have been looking for the past two years, there’s a lot of them, but clean ones in the right spec are few and far between.

Im a big old Mercedes’ guy with an 1987 560SL and 1991 560SEL so a late SL500 was top of my list, but a chance encounter got me an opportunity to buy another childhood dream
car at trade in value and I had to jump on it (despite its many shortcoming). I figured as someone looking for an SL500, you’d appreciate some pictures.

The right SL will come along, and while the German cars are, heavier feeling? which is what I think is the best way to describe old Mercedes, there’s a reason why my daily continues to be a Lexus

Great pics. And yeah, I mean an R129 SL is a couple hundred pounds heavier than my LS430 is. I went to Mercedes here to run the VIN, it had a service history but a big 50-60k mile gap with northing which wouldn't be a dealbreaker as long as there are legit records for that gap from a good indy, but the taste is getting a little sour in my mouth.

The boat is here, also still wrapped and needs prep but it's here on the lot. So there's that, I really don't care about anything else. But yes I still want this Mercedes if it checks out.
