Mercedes is always one step ahead of Lexus with their options and power trains... (just not hybrid)
The first ML did come off the production line several months before the first RX.

I think the RX was great because it provided a polished carlike driving experience from start to finish while having the utility of an SUV. The ML, quality issues aside, fit a need for the market but it was still a BOF SUV.

It was great in that they identified a demand and built a product that perfectly catered to that demand, and the net result is that the industry is different because of their leadership.

What I would like to see from Lexus is them do something like that again...doing that requires that they take chances though and they don't like taking chances anymore. Well, except with styling...

This RX, I don't see how it moves the segment forward in any way.

Good point about it being BOF, most people don't realize that. I had forgotten myself

The first-gen X5 is a closer analogy to the RX than the ML, but it came out a few months later.

The truth is if the RX is the model that now defines the Lexus brand, can they be taken seriously as a true Luxury brand?

Mercedes is still defined by the Sclass.
BMW has Motorsport and technology.
Audi has Quattro.
Porsche has the 911.

RX is a success from a sales standpoint but it has also been very detrimental by keeping Lexus focused on cheap econobox platforms from Toyota instead of developing something truly great.

Lexus really should have abandoned all of the shared platforms from Toyota back in 2017 when they introduced the GA-L platform for the LS/LC. All of the new redesigns that are cropping up now probably could be sitting on that very platform... I don't get why they would spend so much in R&D to only use it for 2 products.

Four if you count the Mirai and Crown.

From what I've read, the problem with the platform is that it isn't particularly space-efficient, which is why the LS500 is such a (for its size) cramped vehicle. Even the ES has more interior volume. Same complaints with the Crown in Japan, and obviously the Mirai, though the hydrogen tanks didn't help.

It will definitely hurt their sales with each generation of Lexus taking on a significant price hike. The base level may seem cheap but they have de-spec'ed the base models to the bone which makes them questionable as a Luxury car. Look at the ES - base model doesn't have memory seats, I can get that on a Camry.

It'll definitely be interesting to see the future of the ES (and its pricetag) once it gets the RX500h powertrain. If Lexus prices it at the same level as a straight-six 5 Series, I wonder how well it would sell. Effectively, it would move a tier into GS territory.

True. Nuts. I remember when a $25,000 car was "nice".

The W140 came out in 1992. In 1989/1990 we had the W126, which didn't have cupholders. The W140 was also WAY more expensive than the LS400.

They definately weren't "gizmo" cars, which I actually liked.

Disagree.
Thats your brand loyalty showing...in what way are they more similar to Mercedes or BMW than Acura or Lincoln today?
