The Golf and Jetta are on the same platform and are essentially two different shapes of the same car. The Golf is a hatchback, and the Jetta is a sedan. In the second generation (Mk2) pictured, both were available with either 2 or 4 doors.
They did introduce an estate (wagon) version of the Golf in 1993 for the Mk3, which is one gen newer than the picture. It is differentiated from the hatchback by having a window behind the C pillar. In the 6th generation of the Golf/Jetta, the Golf estate was sold in a few markets (including the US) as the “Jetta Sportwagen” from 2009-2014, before reverting to being the “Golf Sportwagen” it had already been elsewhere.
