Yes and no. Mechanically, it was a significant improvement from the ill-fated Vega, but clearly not in the Corolla/Civic class. And, yes, the El-Cheapo Scooter version I mentioned above was mainly for someone who could usually not afford a new car, period.

Corolla had a way better engine in the 1.6 liter, and overall the car was far better built. 1.6 in the Chevette had zero refinement and wasn't reliable.

I didn't know the Chevette offered two engine sizes like in the article you posted.

The one I destroyed must've been the 1400cc smaller engine because it never broke 80 mph (with AC off) before it died. Lol

That looks like a late model year, unless Canada implemented the mandatory 3rd brake light earlier than the US (1986). I think they only made the Chevette up until '87.

My first encounter with them was Driver's Ed. My high school had a small fleet of them for training. After practicing with my dad's Lincoln Marc IV, it was super easy to drive.

Do you remember if they came with power steering?
I want to say no but I can't remember.

1986 the third brake light was standard.

That's because a vast majority of them fell apart by 1994.

As a throw-back, this was Chevy’s ad campaign for the Chevette when new, 1975 IIRC. They also had billboard out (can’t find a picture of one) that said “As of October 2nd there will be a new kind of American Car” and it had a car underneath a sheet - completely hidden. I can recall that from when I was a kid - quite a buzz.

My dad was a Chevy salesman at the time, and brought one home that day or a day or so later, and all the family and neighbors came to check it out. Needless to say, the response was distinctly underwhelming after all the Chevy ad hype. I can recall this still, and I was a LITTLE kid at the time.
