A tribute to how Ford ruined Mazda.

Yep.....Tribute it is.

Actually, the 1Gen Escape (which is what the Tribite was based on), was, IMO, the best overall, and the best-looking, of the Escape models. The generations since it, IMHO, have not been as nice or pleasant to drive.

I was also a fan of the Tribute....I never liked the CX-5 or CX-7 as much, which replaced it.

So does the Mazda Tribute have a Ford engine or the other way around?

I believe it was still all Ford, just changed the grille & tail lights. They also made a Mercury Mariner, 3 vehicles, all basically the same.

Yes, it was essentially a rebadged Escape, with Ford engines. although not quite as much so as the Mercury Mariner. It used the Ford Zetec 4 and Duratec V6.

On the topic of re-badging/ badge engineering; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebadging one realizes how lucky we are NOT having the US-markets Badge engineering ideas
Maybe we European buyers are more conservative and buy the big national brands first and foremost, while the US Average-Joe go for "bang-for-the-buck" regardless of brand/origin....

The European market also has its share of rebadging and/or platform-sharing. VW/Seat/Skoda, Opel/Vauxhall, and Fiat/Bertone/Lancia are good examples.

More platform sharing then just "nosejobs" in the European market id say..
Worst example was the VAG-group PQ34 platform ( ca year 2000) that brought us a line up of cars with mediocre chassis/handling even though the outside promised more....

I was walking thru the parking lot today and I had my hands full and left my phone in the car when I saw this little shrimp of a car.

The paint was faded and looked horrible but since I couldn't get a pic, I found one just like it to post.

PS- I went fancy and started up Microsoft Paint and air brushed out the badges and logos to make it a little harder for you all, hopefully... lol

What am I?

My fondest memory of the Fiat 500 was at a rental agency, I believe in Las Vegas. There was a line, and by the time we got assigned our vehicle, we walked out to the lot and saw the young couple (probably mid-late 20s) who had been just in front of us being shown to their car, which was a Fiat 500. The man looked quietly disappointed, but his gf/wife said loudly, "I am NOT. Driving. THAT!"

Once safely in our Tahoe, I had a solid laugh and then drove away.
