The SL has shorter gears than I would have thought. 2500RPM at 85? It does make for quite instant acceleration without downshifting. You can barely see the MPG gauge but I’m getting about 25 and change, so it doesn’t matter. This was a steady, flat cruise.

At that RPM rate I'm betting you will still have a good top end MPH.
And the gusto will be there at 100 mph+ I'm guessing.

That's very classic Mercedes back in the eras of 5-speed an 4-speed transmissions. Definitely took me off guard when I was old enough to understand rpms and would monitor the tach when someone was driving me around.

Oh it's governed at 155, so obviously that overdrive gear will take you right there lol. And yes, it has incredible high speed legs.

Doesn't bother me at all but it is different, I don't remember W140s being this way. But that was a long time ago. I know MB all used the same 5speed automatic transmission at that time but gearing must have been different.

Also since I brought up gauges, I love that the coolant gauge is actually accurate. It fluctuates just a bit when I drive.

how many gears does your car have?

obviously transmission gearing depends on many factors including responsiveness, durability, complexity, fuel economy, etc.

my LC has 10 gears and 9 and 10 are clearly only for highway cruising (probably 1500rpm at 80). in either of the sport modes the car automatically limits itself to the first 8 gears for more responsiveness.

My ML500 is almost at 3k by 80mph. I quickly looked at the W140 forums and they were around the same rpm. MB really wanted that responsive feel on the highway.

Okay it doesn’t get much cooler than this, lol. It just happened.

And yeah about the short gears, as long as it’s getting decent MPG I don’t care. It’s for the best, downshifts are pretty much not needed lol.

Slick ad that popped up in one of my feeds. Those Contis did look nice when new at least.

Nice ad. Sometimes when I am bored. I like to call old phone numbers from old mags. I just called this one. The number now belongs to a medical alert centre

one time I called a number for the United Colours of Benetton.

JAAAAAAAG

Finishing up the XJR, before water would just cling and sheet....countless water spots and scratches are removed now. Finally looks decent but the hood could really use a repaint IMO

Still have a terrible reputation...no matter who owns them. And yes, I know Ford sold them. Now it's Tata Motors from India.
