The 4's hatch is a huge benefit over the 3's trunk. I'd like to know what the 3 Series Touring costs, but we don't have it in the U.S. market to make an equivalent comparison.

I had a e92 335i coupe with N54 engine and Msport pack back in the day.

The position of the 4series relative to the 3series coupe in prior generations is exactly the same.
I think the key difference is that, in the F3X generation, the base 3-Series was more down market than the base 4-Series. You could get a stripper 320i with a less powerful engine, but no equivalent US 4-Series model was available. So the 4-Series naturally had a higher base price. But at the top end, there was nothing that made a fully-loaded 4-Series more "upmarket" vs the 3-Series.

But now the 320 is dead, I'm not sure what the content difference is between the base sedan vs. GC for the $4K premium.

Is though? Cubic foot wise the capacity is about the same. Last generation, it was the 3-series Gran Turismo hatch that had the major trunk room advantage.

Just checked and you're right, the 4 GC actually has less trunk volume than the 3. That's pathetic lol
