Iran: $0.20
Syria: $1.08
Algeria: $1.19
Kuwait: $1.29

There is no strong correlation between gas price and economy.
Not sure it’s easy to compare the U.S. to other countries. In the US in we drive way more than any other country so we rely on gas more. If we didn’t drive as much maybe it wouldn’t be as big of a deal. It has helped that many work from home these days.

I had similar experience....in Chattanooga when I started driving in 1968 I remember gas at 26.9. The occasional gas wars would get gas down to $.20 a gallon.
Also brings back the remembrance of the old credit card machines where the attendant would put the credit card and a blank ticket in the machine, and slide the top over to make an imprint of name and card number on the ticket.

Good times lol! Plus you always had to remember your license plate# which they usually asked for when paying by credit.

Everything was cheap, including wages and salaries.

The thread is June 2022 gas prices, not "Historical Gas Prices", right?

the US also is the top refining country by capacity and amount of product. Of course we would get to enjoy cheaper crude products

Or just get an EV. Seems to work out fine for most people that own them.

In 2005 when gas in the Bay area reached $5, I was seriously thinking of getting a Honda scooter to ride to work. Since it was summer, I was thinking I would ride in the summer to work and park it in the winter, or whatever it is we call winter here. Gas prices ended up going down and thank God I never bought the scooter

When it costs diesel trucks that bring us all of our stuff more than a buck a mile to bring it to us, things get more expensive. Diesel fuel is $6 and 18 wheelers get between 5 and 6 MPG. It's $17 at Olive Garden for just fettuccine noodles and slop sauce, not even chicken Alfredo just noodles. Was looking up restaurants earlier to see increases, they're there and very noticeable. We used to go to OG, it's not authentic of course but you could walk in there, get completely stuffed full of salad and decent tasting food and walk out for $27 including tip for two people. Those days are gone.

Your first statement is just false, but I'm not going to argue nor is it allowed.

Yes it's June of 2022 and gasoline is $5. Highest it's ever been (yes, inflation adjusted), so what does "Historical" have anything do do with it.

We literally drive nowhere except piddle and have a $400 gas bill each month, which is insanity, gas guzzler vehicle and all. New boat will cost $200 every fillup (30 gallons) and I'll probably use at tank a weekend at least. I know this isn't permanent so it's a little easier to swallow, but it's still horrendous. What about all the low income people with junkers that get 11MPG?

Inflation will eventually go down, especially as interest rates are going up, and supply chain shortages and restraints come back to normal. Now gas prices are a different issue, historically they have come down after steep rises, but never to their original levels. As people are going back into the office as well as summer travel demands, demand is high, and oil producers realize that if supply is constrained, prices stay high. They realize with current record oil company profits, this is a temporary cash cow they need to milk. Just check out CEO compensation for some of the big oil companies, they aren't going to give this up until the very end

I don't really think about it much. It's all about what the free market allows, either big pharma, big oil, or big tech. If the market is ok with it, than so am I. I was neither defending nor against big oil companies raking in profit, I mean that's what companies are supposed to do
