if one waits in a long line for gas, doesn't that defeat any savings unless you turn the engine off?

Bought my first $5 gas Tuesday....93 octane at $5.24 for the S550. Sam's/Costco is $.20 cheaper, but by the time you drive and potentially wait, you eat up the $3 savings. You can still find regular at $4.55 to $4.65 in the area, although nearest station is $4.99. I put 89 octane in MDX at $4.94, so likely above $5 at next fill-up.

For me, the choice of which gas station to use is all about time. If I'm in a hurry, then I will use the Chevron that's less than a mile from my house. It's more expensive, but super convenient and quick. If I need to buy a lot of gas (ahem, Tundra) then it's more worth it for me to plan to hit up a cheaper gas station. For that, I'll usually use Kroger as there isn't typically much of a line and I can just hit it once I pick up our groceries. I used to use Costco all of the time, but now it's always super busy. I can't go in the morning because my work schedule doesn't allow it. I just don't have the time to wait there, especially when I can just get it at Kroger for the same price.

This morning the Costco near my work was actually relatively empty. Every pump had an opening. One could have been in and out of there in 10 minutes. It's the first time I've seen it that empty in a long time

I usually end up at Kroger or QuikTrip. I try not to go to too many gas stations, since I like to know the fuel at a given station plays nice with our vehicles.
One thing that really grinds my gears is when the 87 octane gas is cheap, but there's a huge jump for 93. The Mobil station falls under this category... their 87 is usually the cheapest, yet they have 93 that's more expensive than average.

Same. Though, there's a convenient Mobil station I refuse to use because they are almost always 10 cents more than everything else in a 5-minute radius of m house.

We used to have Krogers in the Bay Area, but they all seemed to have disappeared

Yeah, if it's "recommended", I'd probably do the same. In my GLI, for instance, it was "recommended" but not required, but in that case, I still ran premium. But right about now, if I still had that car, I'd probably run 87. Sadly our cars both require 91 or above.

i go where it's convenient and the gas station is pleasant enough / clean enough to deal with.

That is a failsafe designed to prevent engine damage/failure. The goal is to never HAVE knock to necessitate retarding timing. Relying on the knock sensor continuously in a $100k car is a false economy.
