Ford Electric SuperVan at Goodwood Festival of Speed (and history)
With 2,000 hp it carries on a long tradition of overpowered Ford vans from Europe
Ford just pulled the covers off the vastest Transit van it has ever created. On the surface, that may not sound all that impressive, but if you think that, it's probably because you're not familiar with Ford's UK division and its history with the SuperVan. Before we delve into those, let's take a closer look at the all-new Electric SuperVan that just debuted at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Ford says the Electric SuperVan is based on the platform of its upcoming E-Transit Custom electric production van, but it's seriously beefed up in every way imaginable. Four electric motors — one for each wheel — add up to produce nearly 2,000 horsepower. A liquid-cooled 50kWh battery pack provides the juice. It can go from 0-60 in less than 2 seconds. SuperVan indeed.
The bodywork is clearly designed specifically for speed, with a massive cutout at the rear that surely aids in aerodynamics, punctuated by a massive rear wing. While that does indeed cut down the van's cargo capacity, there's still a pretty large space inside. The rest of the carbon composite bodywork hugs the wheels and road below, with all manner of aero trickery to get it to stick to the asphalt.
As you can see from the video above, Ford's Electric SuperVan is frighteningly fast. It was driven down the Goodwood course by multi-time Le Mans winner Romain Dumas, and even he looks to be working hard to put all that power down.
Past Ford SuperVans have been powered by V8 engines. The first from 1971 (see above) stuffed 435 horsepower and 5.0 liters worth of V8 courtesy of a Ford GT40 race car. The second in 1984 upped the ante with a Cosworth-developed 3.9-liter V8 with 590 horsepower at a stratospheric 9,500 rpm. SuperVan 3 hit the scene in 1994, powered by a F1-spec 3.5-liter Cosworth V8 with as much as 700 horsepower. Numbers 2 and 3 are featured in the video below.

Ford SuperVan spied flexing its 2,000 horsepower on the Nurburgring
The electric, 2,000-horsepower Ford SuperVan unveiled earlier in 2022 is destined to remain at the concept stage, but it's not ready to sit in a warehouse quite yet. Our spy photographers caught the prototype hauling much more than boxes on Germany's famed Nürburgring track.
It doesn't look like much has changed since the SuperVan made a splash at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The van giving it all on the 'Ring is tall, wide, low, and fitted with a body kit you'd expect to find on a race car. It needs the downforce: It's powered by four electric motors (one per wheel) that draw electricity from a 50-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack to make Rimac Nevera-rivaling power. Ford quotes the SuperVan's 0-to-60-mph time at under 2 seconds, which sounds like every Amazon delivery driver's dream come true.

While the odds of seeing a SuperVan deliver your next Prime order are low, the concept isn't simply an exercise in automotive excess. The platform it's built on is related to the one that underpins the E-Transit Custom, a battery-powered van developed for the European market.
