Default Rear cross traffic alert accuracy

So for those of you who have this system how reactive is it? I ask since I was leaving a parts store after dropping off oil from my house tank and a guy came absolutely flying across the lot going like 35-45.

I back out slowly and manually check around me so I saw him enter but that got me wondering if my system would trigger. It didn't/conditions were not correct for it do so/didn't work or something, it may only work when I'm moving at least slightly and not just in gear?

That got me wondering just how accurate/capable the systems actually are, would they work if both parties are not paying attention? Is there is incoming speed window that anything outside of it it would be blind to? I as I've said expect systems like this to work at least as good as me so I can rely on them and I'm not sure this is the case....

So for people who have the systems and have had them work how did they do?

What car of yours were you in? Not all cars act the same way. While MOST American/Japanese/Korean OEMs seem to be willing to give you the audible alert when your vehicle is stationary, I believe many recent Europeans (Audi/BMW) I've sampled won't give you the alert unless you're also moving, which I don't really like/agree with that implementation.

BMW is notoriously known for not giving you an alert most of the times. On a good day, it would. My Lexus vehicles never fail to give me one. Sometimes I wonder how it was able to detect cars coming even when I was sandwiched.

I was sitting still, in "R" in my Audi, that would make sense that they trigger differently I guess. I would have assumed it would be the same across all brands since it's a safety feature though.

Our Kia not only beeps and shows arrows on the dash, but will also stop the vehicle. First time it happened I thought I had hit something, found out it just stopped to keep me from possibly hitting a car speeding past.

Yes, that's what makes it dangerous when there's such a discrepancy in execution of a feature. I feel like everyone should align with alerts when in gear, even when stationary.

+1

It sucked on my BMW M340 but was great on my IS350.

The rear cross traffic alert works as expected on my X3 and 5 Series. The 5 Series has it on the front too. It's only gone off a couple of times so it seems work as well.

The Pacifica system works extremely well, whether in a parking lot or backing onto a high-speed road. I drive the Lexus so rarely that I can't recall its operation, but it must be fine otherwise I would remember!

This. The K/H/G Smart driving systems are amazing. It also incorporates this very system on the sides too. Living in the middle of a city where parallel parking is a must, it'll give audible warnings and apply brakes if need be if a car, bike pedestrian is in your path when exiting a parallel parking spot. It's not over aggressive either. Really well done.

That is the key. BMW also has this and IMO when it works, it's a bit over aggressive. I had to turn that particular feature off for surroundings because when backing out, it senses the sides of the garage and it would apply hard brake. Once that happens, I would have to drive forwards then back out again hoping it won't brake. It may be my garage is a bit narrow for the car.
I remember reading this type of RCTA complaint on BMW forums and people also comment that their other cars work fine. A few claim their BMWs work fine. But those with other brands surely know it either does not work, or they have a very different mechanism for it to go off.

Wow, that's crazy. That's a bit more than being aggressive. Sounds like trash programming. Lol. Your garage I would hope is stationary. Lol. Shouldn't alert of things that are stationary objects surrounding your vehicle. Very strange. Anything reflective or glossy around that area maybe?

It's not the cross traffic alert that's picking up the garage edge per se, its the rear automatic emergency braking that also uses rear parking sensors. Many cars have shown this sensitivity to be difficult to manage. Was over active on our Polestar 2 when we first got it, but subsequent programming updates seem to have mitigated it.
