i have a 2007 IS250 with now over 212k miles. i used to do the 10k OCI when i ran 5w-20 after dealer recommendations and reading a few threads in the IS forum but i got the known VVTI cam gear chatter on cold start up (started after 150k miles). recently i switched back to 5w-30 and 5k OCIs and it cut the cam chatter in half if not more!

however my subaru outback running 0w-20 has a OCI of 7.5k - but i think i'll be changing it more often now after this thread (plus it burns almost 2 quarts between changes - a boxer engine feature )!

as with the most talked about automotive topic on the internet, there are so many factors to consider (oil type, engine type, driving habit, ambient temp, filter, maintenance, etc).

on my parents' 2019 C300 coupe however there's not even a dipstick tube! i normally wouldn't care on a lease but after getting a service it would start giving an alert message to "reduce the oil level", which should be easy to just siphon out from top of the engine, but you can only do so from underneath!
Usually the sensor will throw a code of it can't see the oil level or when you turn the engine on it doesn't see a level change. It will set a "oil level too high" code and if you know it has the right amount it is not reading level, it can also set a code implausible value/voltage or a dead short/continuity issue. BMW is the one that is infamous for sensors failing at a fixed value that is plausible and then running out of oil....certain older Passats and Jettas also have this happen since their sensor system is not as complex as what Mercedes and the high end others use.

It's more of a "is there oil in car" type system not an active measurement like on your car that can actually tell if it is low and by how much in real time.

Yep, I have a few of those tools on the wall for checking those types of engines and transmissions.

My absolute record for OCI is a customer with a 100 series Land-cruiser inline 6 engine....he usually goes 20-30k miles and has done so for 4 changes now. I KNOW it's my filter and oil each time since I sign them. Freaking unreal but then again I guess it's a super low strain engine for modern synthetic oil? My personal record is 15000 miles on the Jeep with conventional when it had the cracked head, didn't matter since coolant just auto topped off lol!

the notification will pop up usually 10-15 minutes into the drive, i guess once the oil warms up it'll expand just enough to trip the sensor
