Sales people don't set dealership policy; management does.

I had to get my son a car this summer. The dealership pricing was $2K over MSRP, but they agreed to waive it because I was "local". They didn't want people from further away depleting inventory for their local, more regular/repeat customers. Maybe it was a line of BS, but there have been other threads here on Car Chat with the same experience this past year.

This is just about supply. CA dealers have a lot of inventory compared to the rest of the country, and they tend to have better deals and right now because of the scare inventory most dealers in CA have decided not to sell outside their local market.

right but it depends on the vehicle, the inventory, the buyer, the deal, etc. obviously some dealers have decided to keep it in state. more power to 'em.

One Kia dealer in NJ will only sell to people within its and a few other zip codes.

Sales tax is collected based on where the car is going to be registered. Either the dealer collects it for you and remits to your state or you pay it when you register the car.

I could have a friend purchase the vehicle, but they would have to pay sales tax. Once I brought the car to Colorado, I am guessing I would have to pay sales tax again with a new vehicle. Anyone have insight on this?
Once your friend purchases the car and "sells" it to you then you would probably have to pay the sales tax on the FMV of the sale when registering. Isn't this how it works when one purchases a used vehicle from an individual?

I live in FoCo and called down to dealers in the Colorado Springs area and they refused to sell to me because I wasn’t in their local area. So I’m not surprised a dealer from out of state refused to sell to you if we can’t even get in-state dealers to sell to in-state customers right now.

Local buyers show and tell local friends that buy more local cars.
Local buyers return for service and warrantee work.
Local buyers pay local and state sales taxes.
Purchase price is not the largest source of dealership profit.

Not uncommon right now. Many dealers are holding inventory for local customers. Many dealers also get dinged by their OEMs if they sell too many vehicles outside of their assigned market areas. Some dealers do enough volume (in normal times) where they don't care and can get dinged and left out of regional marketing bonuses etc.

California has an added bonus that you need to ship the car out of the state if you're not keeping it in the state, you can't just fly in and drive it off the lot like some states have, otherwise that sales tax gets triggered.

In southern Florida, many of the dealers used to do a lot of export business to Central America, but especially the Caribbean. That is not the case so much with many newer dealers in those geographic regions.

I have coworkers here in Vegas who bought cars in California in the last year or two.

So it's not illegal.

Now if you want a fun time, go hang out in a Vegas gun store and watch the sad look on the faces of Californians who find out they can't buy guns here.

I'm not sure why one could purchase a vehicle in CA due to the taxes over 9%. At least here in Nevada we get a break on trading in.
