Can't say for sure, but a very likely reason is that sales of the ZX models, as with its Mazda RX-7, Toyota Supra, Dodge Stealth, and Mitsubishi 3000 GT competitors dropped off drastically in the mid-90s, and they were all pulled from the American market. When the 350Z was introduced some years later in 2002, Nissan apparently felt (correctly) that it should return to the older Z moniker.
