I’d love to see a picture of that on a 2012 or up Chevy or gmc 2500 with a console shifter if you can find one!

I'll find one. It's just, nothing screams D-E-T-R-O-I-T better than a chunky, substantial column shifter in an American truck. Lol.

And it does free up space that's just the bonus to me, my LX570 has terrible room around the shifter area. Have to use the cupholders for storage. I just can't picture a Lexus with a column shifter though.

all this talk about shifters, all you are moving is electrical contacts, there is no mechanical linkage anymore and it hasnt been that way in many years. Whether it is a console shifter, column shifter, rotary shifter, its still all electronic.

Then why do the shifters move ever so slightly, say, when you put it in park while parking on an incline sometimes and don't put the parking brake on and hit the parking prawl? It doesn't happen often, but I've seen it.

To make you think/feel like it's doing something. That's it. That's why on digital transmissions I would prefer a rotary dial like in the 8 speed Chryslers. Fast, easy, compact, and you can have paddles to control actual gears.

Now if the shifter has a nice feel like an LS460 I'll let the shifter slide, not really a reason for it but it does feel very nice and puts a smile on my face feeling it work.

do you see any cables or linkages going from the steering column down the the transmission? All it is is electric switches going to a computer which controls the transmission. People think they are moving something but they arent, dont kid yourselves into thinking that.

Pretty sure the shifter is directly connected to the transmission in my truck. There may be electronics or whatever but I think it's connected.

In your 2003 GMC? Yes, it's probably a cable linkage. In the 2024 that is the topic of this thread? Nope.

Edit: confirmed, here is a replacement shift cable for your truck

My LX the shifter is mechanically connected I'm 90% sure, all the 200 series LC/LX so that would be up to 2021, that's the truck I was talking about. I already knew my GMC was.

In the 6 speed yes, the 8 speed no. The cable only does the parking prawl in the 8 speed

Another reason that 8 speed auto is trash. Slows the truck down almost a second to 60 (shifts twice) plus it's not directly connected.

Huh, I was surprised to learn the column shifter in my 2015 F-150 uses an actual linkage instead of electronic control. I do like the feel.

GM has been column shift only up until the 2022 model year I think. Now the high trim half-tons have a console shifter, but I believe column remains an option in lower trims.

The HD trucks have always been column shift across the board, though I think RAM went to a dial for the 6.4 Hemi trucks.

Yeah, I'm not sure you can get the column shifter in a 1500 along with the fanciest interior in the updated GMs, which is unfortunate.

youre also stuck with the old transmissions if you have a shift linkage, the new 8/9/10 speed ZFs are going to be modern electronic transmissions.

we know from your endless posts that anything you don't own is trash and any innovation newer than 7 years ago is no good.
