Default 2023 Honda Civic Type R

Starts just under $44,000

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R boasts the most power of any Civic Type R in history (so far). It's also almost the most expensive one offered in America so far. The base price is now $43,990 including the $1,095 destination charge. That's barely $1,000 less than the Type R Limited Edition, which was, as its name suggests, a highly limited edition.

This also makes the Type R more expensive than its new rival, the Toyota GR Corolla. The GR Corolla starts at $36,996, and it packs all-wheel drive. For $38,175, it adds mechanical limited-slip differentials front and rear. Of course, we're expecting the Type R to be slightly lighter (the last regular Type R weighted 3,121 pounds to the base GR Corolla's 3,252), and it does have a bit more power and torque. The Type R makes 15 more horsepower (315) and 37 more pound-feet of torque (310). The Morizo Edition Corolla closes the torque gap, but the Honda still has a 15 pound-foot advantage.

The Type R is still cheaper than the VW Golf R, though. The VW starts at $45,385. The Honda has just as much power and more torque than the VW, too. The VW does have all-wheel drive, but it's heavier than even the Corolla with a curb weight of 3,404 pounds.

The 2023 Civic Type R will be available at dealerships starting tomorrow. So if you have the scratch, you don't have long to wait to get one.

What is that tiny rear windshield wiper clearing?!

Looks really good outside of the rear wing.

Price means nothing, will be marked up sky high.

43k price is insane. I'd still buy one over a 2.0 Supra and Z though.

Agreed price means nothing. Big price hike by Honda is them trying to take their share of the prior gen's dealer markups, as well as improvements of this gen. I spoke with my local dealer over a year ago about putting a reservation down, willing to wait, if they'd do no markup. They said at that time they wouldn't imagine doing a markup for a local customer. They didn't want to do deposits until the pricing was confirmed. This week they finally called, but they were happy to tout that they would charge ONLY $20,000 on top of MSRP. I laughed and told them good luck. No doubt they'll get some people to buy with that markup. but $64K puts in into an entirely different realm with tons of other terrific sports cars.

I dig it; more mature and subtle compared to the last gen.

Just a couple of the YouTube reviews I had the chance to watch late last night. I'm sure that was an awesome experience to get to drive around with Checo. Looks to perform very well.

The GR Corolla Circuit Edition, which is the top dailyable trim, $44k just like the Type R. Any discussion of "practical family cars that can also be tracked" should automatically exclude 4-door cars with no back seats, speakers, or functional windows, such as the Morizo edition. Lots of sporty cars have had ultra-limited full-boat racecar editions for decades now, which never get brought into these discussions until the past few weeks.

For the GR Corolla, you could just get the Core Edition and option it with the performance, cold weather and tech packages and basically have the Circuit Edition for almost 5k less ($39,445 vs $43,995). You'd just be missing the forged carbon-fiber roof and a different hood (maybe different tires too?).
