Yeah I know it's random but thought it would be fun. From 1990-1999 there were a lot of great cars made - obviously lacking a lot of the technology (and safety) we take for granted today. But.. If today you had to buy a car that was produced from 1990-1999 and drive it as your main vehicle (so it has to fit your current lifestyle - if you have kids, a 2 seater wouldn't work), what would you buy? And you have to be able to afford it!

We obviously benefit from some hindsight here in knowing how well certain cars have held up - but others might be willing to drive something that isn't overly proven in reliability in exchange for a great vintage design.

So...what are you buying?

that's a pretty big hypothetical as there's nothing i can think of from the 90's i'd want to drive today.

but if i had to, maybe an lx470 because it's likely to still be reliable (after common fixes) and it'll do anything i need and be comfortable. not exciting though.

Just off the top of my head, the 1991 Coupe deVille. Loved the one I had.

If I had an LC500 I would probably have a hard time thinking of something from the 90's I'd want to drive as well...

But there are definitely good choices. I'm intrigued by what people have shared so far!

Probably an E36 M3. Relatively clean examples can be had in the $12-15k range, they're great to drive and easy to repair. Or perhaps an R33 or R34 Skyline GT-R. Though show-quality examples of the limited trims are well into the $200-300k range, a good condition but higher mileage driver R34 runs $60-75k, and they're importable up through 1998. R33s are a little bit cheaper.

C5 Corvette would be another good option, though most of the early-year cars likely have a disabled and unrepairable traction/stability control at this point, and the interior quality leaves something to be desired. But capable, fun to drive, and will run pretty much forever.

Never heard of this car - what is the appeal about this that would have it be the car you'd select above anything else? You're buying it today as a 20-30 year old car - so if you wanted an S class Mercedes you could get one of those for let's say $15k. You still choosing the Pony?

Just something unique. Everyone will just have the same old cliched response. I’d like to buy a Buick Roadmaster if I can find something super cheap. Even if it lasts me a short time.

This is why I posed the question, I knew we'd see some unique vehicle recommendations.

One of the best all around vehicles we ever owned was the 1993 Volvo 850 GLT. Not your typical Volvo, this was a front wheel drive vehicle with a five cylinder, transverse mounted engine. Fun to drive with roomy comfortable interior. It was my wife's car for about 8 yrs.
I found this short review online:

Daily would be 1998 GS400 - probably one of the best cars available at that time.

Weekend would be MKIV Supra
