Default Toyota hybrid vs. Hyundai

new found appreciation for the Toyota hybrid tech. Power split device is really where it's at. I have an Acura MDX Hybrid and the power delivery is just not the same as Toyota hybrid. The video below is a comparison of Hyudai and Toyota hybrids.

This isn't what you'd call unbiased since it's presented by a Toyota master mechanic, but he makes a solid case and I agree it's a really damning video from Hyundai's perspective. As my brother puts it, "The cost savings have to come from somewhere."

They constantly break and require a lot of service to not have a better chance of not breaking. It's a really shoddy way to provide hybrid assist vs toyota/lexus and puts a lot of strain on the crank nose, real world fuel use is also only 1-2 mpg better than a non-hybrid version of the same car.

More to break on a Hyundai Hybrid than a regular gas Hyundai

Yes and the issue is the hybrid doesn't share a lot of parts with the gas car so parts are not only on a 1-3 week delay they also cost 2-3x as much in some cases. There are no long term savings with this system since if you replace the hybrid drive belt every 30k miles like you need to it costs too much to cover the minor gain in MPG since the dealers charge stupid money for it.

Yes it is, the belt is under stupid stress and is known to fail a lot. It has to have enough tension via the belt to move the entire car, it requires twin MASSIVE tensioners and a very wide belt.

Wow. Pretty poor design by Hyundai. I just looked it up.

Change HSG belt at 12, 24, 48, 72 etc.
But then you also have to pay to have it inspected at 6, 18, 32, etc
Fuel injection cleaner 18, 30, 42, 60
Replace auto transmission fluid at 72

What is the cost to change the HSG?

Oil changes are not a very long interval either?

Injector cleaning isn't really needed since it's not DI in some, IF it's DI then yes you should do an intake decarbon every 30k or they will build up and lose power/mpg. Oil changes are critical and I strongly recommend full synth at 5k or less since hybrids beat the hell out of oil.

Cost to replace just the tension system is $2500 at the dealer, belt is $350, HSG is $3000. Though me I can get the tension system working for $780 with OE parts but the HSG is just an expensive part.....not much I can do.

It is listed in the scheduled maintenance. (suggested). Never seen an auto manufacturer mention this.

I have no issue with oil changes at 5K. Just surprised Hyundai is not on the longer intervals. I don’t particularly like how Toyota went to the longer intervals.

the belt system seems very poor thought out by Hyundai
