Default Do you leave your car running when refueling?

Always have always will.

Apparently this is hotly debated, I was in a mile-long thread on FB.

I may turn my car off if I’m going in the store but I don’t turn the engine off when refueling. I’ll stand there and watch the fuel gauge as it fills.

All opinions welcome but please no nasty tones, this is a semi warm issue. I understand why people do shut their engines off, for sure. I’ve been refueling with friends in the car and they turned it off themselves once lol.

If I ever die from refueling with engine running I’ll have my heirs report it on here.

It's supposed to be illegal, but personally I don't really care unless you are smoking and fueling. Than adios amigo, I'm getting as far away as I can

No, I have systems checks to perform and it's hard to check fluids and belts if they are moving/splashing lol! There is not reason you would need to turn if off other than a risk of an EVAP code assuming no exhaust leaks and that you don't have a distributor type ignition....if you do have a dissy there is like a 1/100000 chance fuel vapor could be ignited. Older cars were/are much riskier to refuel when live though, a lot of the fear is carryover from older style pump handles and tank designs as well.

EDIT: As above post says, if you smoke you stand a hell of a lot higher of a risk from that lighting off tank vapors. It would still shock you how hard it is to get stuff to light off, I have welded near a leaking tank before with no issues.

The above is very accurate about getting gasoline to light and explode. If you drop a cigarette in a splotch of gasoline on pavement it will likely extinguish.

It’s not like the movies where a cigarette will ignite WW3. It’s really not even that dangerous to smoke at gas pumps honestly but that’s absolutely a no-no.

I would rather not test that theory lol thank you. I once almost burned down our garage as a kid pouring a small amount in something as small as a thimble and lighting it. It's flammable

Never leave it running. This would make a good poll topic.

Thats what I wanted to do but I’m on my phone.

If mods can change this to a poll please do so. Leave the comments on.

If it were really dangerous cars wouldn’t allow us to do it.

Never. Some cars will even trigger a check engine light off the cap is off and it detects a change in pressure.

It's safer to turn off car and throw keys under the seat when fueling up in sketchy neighborhoods or see people creeping around.
Unless ya'll like to be car jacked.

Applies triple when traveling.

No, its illegal for one, dangerous for two, easily carjacked for three.

Whats your reason for leaving it running?

Someone tried to hold me up one time in a bad area with a knife, that was a hilarious experience for me!
