Default Need your ears

Guys
I have a 2003 GS430 with what I consider to be an annoying engine tick. The engine tick is very prominent when the car is cold - or should I say very annoying when the car is cold.

Have had the thing looked at by two dealers. One said bad gas (have name brand premium), the other said injectors. The one that said injectors has had it twice and says that if they change the injectors on one side (because the noise only comes from one side) that it might even get louder.

Bit, over on the GS4xx forum suggested that maybe I need someone else to listen to this? He probably suspects (and rightly so) that I am a bit picky - my point is that the car cost $54K and should not tick.

I should mention that the dealer does not deny the car ticks and that they even tested a 2001 GS430 with 20K on it and said it also had engine tick. But they said mine was louder.

Anyone in the Glen Ellyn/Wheaton area that can give this thing a listen?

Take it to McGrath Lexus in Westmont. Your under warantee and you should be fine. Hell yea! You spent over $50 gs on this car, every small problem you should start yelling about to Lexus. I wouldn't be happy if my Lexus I just bought started doing that. You can even make them replace the entire engine if they can't stop that ticking sound. When you own a Lexus, customer satisfaction is #1! Good Luck! Also goodjob buying a great automobile! I give you my Thumbs up!

McGrath is the one that said it was bad gas. They poured some octane booster in there and said that should do it. Didn't make a difference unfortunately.

No ticks here...but I do hear a definite whine coming from the engine bay.

I know for a fact that my car does it and I have also heard many other lexos do it. I just remember wierd stuff like that but anyway I think that it is just that the engine gets hot and it expands and shrinks with the weather.. You can spend millions on a house and it still can creak in the weather...??? Just a thought..

The key of course is that I need to leave it out overnight - or at least a couple of hours. I could leave it at work and we could meet there maybe?

Chris, if you remember, you actually heard it in the summer when we met out at Sound Performance.

Alex,

GS430 doesn't have spark plug wires. Coils are sitting on top of the spark plugs.

CAR IS FIXED! At least I think it is

Was at the dealer almost a month. A special thanks to Jimxo for listening to the ticking and stating "Man is that annoying".

Seems that it was one of two things. They suspect that some of the lines running from the engine through the firewall were touching each other. They insulated these.

They also had the cover off the engine and then replaced it. I personally suspect that I was getting some resonating in the cover and this might have fixed it.

Interestingly enough, we found that the tick does not occur when the car is REALLY cold (i.e. left outside overnight in 0 degree temp) and it does not occur above 70 degrees. Also, once the car is warmed up the ticking almost goes away. This made it a PITA to diagnose for Lexus. Fortunately a Lexus area tech got involved and helped out.

Now I just need to get the steering pretensioner tightened and the rear end shake fixed and I can live with this car for 2 more years. Thanks again Jimxo!

No biggie, glad your car is fixed.

Drove a BMW 3 last night-very nice car but not as much luxury as the Lexus. Seats and steering felt very sporty
