Independent repair shops/Local help???
Hey everyone, I bought a 91 LS 400 w/136000 miles a couple of months ago & I've been wanting to get some work done to it, like trans & engine mounts, rotors & brakes etc., maybe some major work like timing belt down the road.
I don't want to take to a dealer. They just cost to much. can you guys recommend any good independent shops I could take it to? or if any members can do this type of work for a fee. Thanks for your suggestions.

with a set of jack stands, jack, basic wrenches (14, 17, 19mm open/box ended and 3/8-1/2" sockets), you can comfortably do all your brakes in less than 2 hrs. the tranny mount is relatively straightforward and so are both engine mounts, you can place the jack stands under the front suspension crossmember and use the jack to lift the engine where it couples to the tranny bell housing to give yourself space to remove/install the mounts. i would set aside an entire day to do the timing belt/water pump and it's a good idea to replace the idler pulleys and timing belt tensioner at the same time.

I'm in Aurora (west suburbs). You guys are right, this stuff isn't rocket science. I haven't done a lot of mechanical work before & I feel that I might end up w/a mess , & I've got the tools too that I've never used...
I was looking for help/supervision, but I guess I should just go for it. This site is an excellent resource & the pics are very helpful.

I'll call my guy at bredemann to see if he's cool with doing side jobs for you guys. Let me know how many are interested so I can tell him. He did my timing belt, front ball joints, water pump and something else for like $300. I paid for parts

That would totally be cool. Hopefully we can make a good connection with this guy and have a solid person to work with.

Sounds like a good guy to know.
I'd be intrested as well. My 90K service is coming up and I'd like to change out the timing belt bofore winter hits (the water pump went out around 60k - was replaced under the CPO warrenty).
