Rent in the burbs ain't that low either... I pay almost $1100 in Schaumburg, not including utilities and car modding

$1500 is cheap for GC. I wish I could find a place like that. If that includes parking that is even better. I doubt it though. Parking is usually $200/month around there.

You don't get as much for your money in the Gold Coast as you do elsewhere... it's a great area if you walk to work or like to be downtown, but if you drive your car often, it's a royal pain in the keester as far as traffic and in/out of downtown... I've lived in Lincoln Park near DePaul for over 15 yrs. now, starting as a renter and then owning, and I absolutely love it. Everything is within walking distance, public transport is always nearby, and the crowd is younger than average (I'm starting to feel old...). It costs a bit more than Wicker Park and most places in Bucktown, but it's closer to the lake, if that matters, and it's a bit more upscale, though I also would highly recommend WP and Bucktown if it's closer to your budget.
If you're a Sox fan however, you may want to consider da South Side!!

You can find great deals you just need to look & especially since the market has taken a serious hit. Negotiate with private owners to get the most for your money!

I have to agree the Glock 40 is a nice piece but so is the 17 ( depends on personal preference)

I sold my Glock 17 several years back because a 9mm is weak. I like a 40 to 45 caliber much better. That way, when the dead walk the earth, one shot ought to do it.
