Default Blown water pump // engine 2007 ES350 -- What's Next Step??

My sister owns a '07 ES350 - 71K miles (1k out of warranty). Driving to work on I80 from Frankfort to Valpo, pegs the temp guage on "H", pulls of interstate and car dies at next light. Towed to Merillville Lexus. Service manager Larry tells her engine is OK, but waterpump replacement will be $1800. Agree to repair and two days later recieve news that engine is losing fluid somewhere and must be torn down for inspection. Worst case scenario = $18,ooo !! What would you do? She is loyal Lexus owner (3rd vehicle) but Lexus customer service is no help. My thinking is pull it out of Lexus and have a reputable garage swap in a 3.5L V-6 Toyota engine. What does the Forum think?
