I've been noticing vehicles with blue or smoked license plate covers\shields. Are these legal in Illinois ?

I have a smoked license cover on my SC. This one is legal. I've seen a different one that is for "off-road use only".

I have smoked license plate covers too. From what I know the license should be clearly visible... therefor anything that obstructs a police officer from seeing the license plate will be rewarded with a ticket. I received more tickets than anyone else here, and I never got one for the license plate. It all depends on the police officer.

I'm curious at what point it is considered illegal. Tinted windows in the front is illegal yet I see them almost everyday. I'm interested in the smoked covers. I like the look.

Ok here you go. The colored plate covers are all illegal because the cop has to be able to see the color of your registration sticker from 75 feet away and with the tinted covers . I have gotten pulled over for ones i had on my other car before and that is what the cop had told me.
