High Wind Advisory
PLEASE BE ADVISED AND AWARE ~ CIRCULATION URGED
DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 14, 2009
Department of Emergency Management Issues High Wind Preparedness
Guidance
The Honolulu department of Emergency Management today urged
Oahu residents to prepare for potentially dangerous high winds that are
expected to reach the island by Thursday afternoon and continue into
Friday.
Wind gusts of 60 MPH or more are expected, similar in force to those
produced by a tropical storm. Residents should consider the following
high wind preparedness actions:
* Keep informed of the latest advisories and warnings from
official sources; stay tuned to television and radio stations for
information and updates.
* Trim dead wood and weak / overhanging branches from all trees.
* Be careful of certain trees and bushes vulnerable to high
winds; trees near a home can fall and become a hazard.
* Secure lawn furniture, trash cans, holiday
decorations-especially inflatables-and other outside objects that could
become projectiles in high winds.
* Have flashlights, battery operated radio, and spare batteries
on-hand in case of a power outage.
* Operators of large trucks and SUVs should be prepared for
sudden gusts of wind which could cause momentary loss of vehicle
control.
* Listen carefully for safety instructions from the Department of
Emergency Management and the National Weather Service.
* Curtail non-essential travel and outdoor activities.
* Should you have a high wind related emergency call 9-1-1
immediately.
Remember that debris such as broken signs, roofing material, and small
items left outside become flying missiles during high wind events.
Extensive damage to trees, towers, water and underground utility lines
(from uprooted trees), and fallen utility poles can cause further
disruption.

i have a coconut tree in my front yard which is close to my car... good thing the wind is blowing the opposite direction cuz those coconuts are small enough to be grabbed and thrown by the wind, and if the tree breaks it will fall the other way....... hopefully.

Well...the high winds in November blew down a 10 ft section of my neighbors papaya tree....it came crashing down onto my garage roof....broke tiles and stuff....worse part was...it happened that night when I had knee surgery that morning...so I couldn't walk...luckily, my other neighbors climb on my roof and put a tarp on the damaged area. Im blessed to have awesome neighbors. Costed me $800 to repair...and Im still waiting for reimbursement from my insurance company.
