i asked my friend who's a manager at a major moving company. he said:
"...I get asked this question all the time. No, there is no etiquette or standard of tipping. “Most” of the time they will get lunch and drinks and there are times they don’t even get offered water. Our crews (moving within Oahu) usually get food and tip. Our military movers usually get food and no tip. Just an observation<snip> ...tipping could be based on culture? <snip> ….locals seem to be more generous than non-residents. If the guys are nice tip accordingly. I’ve seen as little as $5.00 to $150.00 per person. Bottom line, tip on performance."
hmmm, i've never tipped a delivery/moving person but have offered them lunch, usu. a sandwich, chips and soda to take w/ them.
on a separate note, i work on-call in the f&b industry and believe tipping should also be based on customer service/dining experience. but general rule for our place is: 10-15% for buffet style and 10-20% for plated dinners; bigger parties will automatically get a service charge of 18%. but if service was better than exceptional, tip to your heart's desire. i had been stiffed with nothing a couple of times but have been tipped 25%+ on occasions. (btw, the meals range from $19 to $48/head) i don't want to mention who the worst tippers are but i will mention that the best tippers on average seem to be those who work or have worked in the f&b industry. Oh, and of course the rich dudes that love to impress their guests. i thank you.
