Just finished modding out a Streamlight Stinger LED flashlight. Stock 65 lumens with the original LED. Second mod was with a Seoul P4 and that cranked out a bit over 200+ lumens. Today just changed out the LED for a Luminus module .. 300+ lumens. Pics to follow...

Also have to mod out my Tomahawk NV light. VERY solid little light. It's rated for 100+ lumens...not for long though!

while we do like bright lite output, battery life is also very important, have you done a longevity test yet?

It still only draws 1 amp per hour, but the LED is much more efficient than the old Luxeon LEDs. Figure about 1.8 hours at full blast, 300 lumens.

Pictured from left to right - Luminus SST50, 6500k, high bin. At 1 amp it's good for around 300 lumens. The LED with the star module is right around 30 dollars.

Middle - Seoul P4, T bin. 1 amp, good for over 200 lumens. 6.04 at digikey.com

Right - Luxeon 1 or Luxeon 3. More than likely the 1 model. 65 lumens at 1 amp. If you can get these, they're still right around 5 bucks. Discontinued though.

Take a look at the center die portion. In overall area, the Luminus is much larger than the Luxeon LED. Luminus can handle up to 5 amps of current, producing over 1200 lumens.

For some reason, Surefire isn't offering any LED lights over 200 lumens. Don't know why - it's quite easy to do!

This is what the SST50 looks like in the Streamlight Stinger LED. Gotta work on a few things, but it looks nice!

So how exactly are these mods done? I can remove everything except the led panel from the "screw-in thingy". How do you get the led panel off? Any tutorials here, or can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Depends on the flashlight. With the streamlight stinger LED, you have to take off the reflector, the retaining ring and then you'll have access to the LED itself. Have to unsolder the wires to the small board. Drop in the new board, make sure there aren't any shorts or metal contact to the leads and you're good to go.

Currently awaiting a new LED module which should take the streamlight up to about 380 lumens. It's at 310 now.
